Position Title
Senior Network Engineer
Job Description
Design, oversee and manage installation, operation and maintenance of data and fiber cabling, network switch equipment, wireless access points, software and monitoring tools for the University's campus network infrastructure and its links to the outside world. Ensure reliable operation of the wired and wireless networks, DNS, DHCP, VPN, VoIP, and firewall services. This is an in-person onsite position.
Essential Functions (Responsibilities):
  • Ensure the appropriate design, implementation, functionality, maintenance, and security of the campus wired and wireless network infrastructure including routers, switches, wireless controllers, access points, firewalls, VPN, NAC appliance, UPS, etc; monitor and manage network traffic to ensure optimal throughput and reliability
  • Perform configuration and management of DNS, DHCP, and IPAM services; design and oversee Wi-Fi networks, including signal strength and site surveys
  • Plan, design, implement and maintain wireless networks to meet the business needs of a medium enterprise
  • Find ways to fine-tune existing wireless networks by adjusting RF settings, client matching, band steering and adjusting/changing areas of the network to provide optimal wireless solutions to the end-user population
  • Support adoption of IoT, SDN and Cloud architectures in campus IT infrastructure

  • Work with different departments across campus to troubleshoot & maintain network connectivity
  • Work with Campus Security to troubleshoot and maintain the campus camera system

  • Serve as the point-of-contact for network-related issues with VoIP telephony infrastructure
  • Create & update network reference documentation including fiber infrastructure paths, wireless AP inventory and locations, edge/distribution layer switch locations & IP addresses, UPS inventory, and logical internet connectivity
  • Take principal responsibility for maintaining existing network standards (e.g., cable types and protocols); establish and implement new network methodologies and standards on campus
  • Write scripts to resolve support issues or automate infrastructure deployment and collect metrics
  • Serve as the primary contact person with outside vendors to design and oversee the installation and maintenance of network cabling (fiber and copper), network switch equipment for the campus network, and its connections to off-campus sites

  • Communicate with vendors and peers to be aware of emerging products, technologies, and services
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, computing, engineering, or other relevant technical fields, or equivalent experience

  • At least four years' experience in a network administrator/engineer position in a midsize or larger environment, utilizing enterprise-class switches and routers (Cisco, Aruba, Juniper, etc.).

  • Advanced experience deploying, managing, and troubleshooting connectivity for a wireless network with a controller-based architecture (Cisco, Aruba, etc.)

  • Experience with NAC and enterprise network firewalls

  • Experience with packet capture and analysis products such as Wireshark

  • Experience in utilizing industry standard network management tools such as PRTG and Nagios

  • Must be able to work in-person onsite

Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced knowledge of WiFi 5/6 and RF channel utilization
• Experience/understanding with QoS, Multicast, and TCP/IP protocol
• Cisco certification at some level (CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent)
• Knowledge or formal training in network security
• Experience with Aruba ClearPass, Mobility Gateways, Palo Alto firewalls, VMware NSX-T, VXLAN, and EVPN
