Senior Natural Resource Specialists develop and maintain Natural Resources. Activities include, but are not limited to all aspects of Natural Resource management: wetlands development, management and maintenance; wildlife development and management; habitat and sensitive species mitigation and development including restoration and enhancement; vegetation management and monitoring; landscape development and maintenance, lease management; and security.Knowledge of:
  • Scientific method and its application.
  • Botany - taxonomy, field identification, and ecology.
  • Mammalogy - taxonomy, field identification, census techniques, methodology, management philosophy, and general ecology.
  • Ornithology - taxonomy, field identification, census techniques, methodology, management philosophy, and general ecology.
  • Fisheries biology.
  • Wetlands and vernal pool ecology.
  • Wildlife sampling, monitoring, and management.
  • Vegetation sampling methods, monitoring, and management.
  • Range management.
  • Agricultural and restoration practices.
  • California Fish and Game and US Fish and Wildlife Service laws and regulations and species listed as special concern or higher.
  • Local, State, and Federal regulation regarding wildlife hazard management.
  • Data analysis and statistical methods and its application.
  • Geology - soil identification and sampling.
  • Wetland management techniques.
  • Land management principles including techniques of Natural Resource management, enhancement, and restoration.
  • Wildlife habitat restoration techniques.
  • Wetlands regulations and management.
  • Landscape maintenance management principles and techniques.
  • Environmental impact assessment and mitigation process, including Federal and State laws and local ordinances governing environmental documentation.
  • Federal and State laws and local ordinances governing protected species .
  • Environmental resource management regulation including federal and state laws regulation placement of fill and waters of the United States.
  • Water Quality monitoring and toxic event investigation techniques.
  • Research and the scientific method including statistical analysis and reporting.
  • Scientific, report, and popular writing.
  • Principles and techniques of personnel management and coordination.
Ability to:
  • Identify different types of vegetation and wildlife by visual observation and recognition of animal voice calls.
  • Design and conduct scientific experiments and apply results to work.
  • Conduct thorough research apply to work.
  • Design and manage complex programs of herbicide application, mowing, burning, and other vegetation management techniques.
  • Analyze problems accurately and take effective action.
  • Prepare written analysis, evaluation, summaries, recommendations, correspondence, and reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Operate personal computer and use software.
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement all components of a Natural Resources management program.
  • Organize and monitor the work of subordinate staff.
  • Recommend, plan, organize, and implement long and short term projects.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in fields such as Biology, Wildlife and Fisheries Biology, Resource Science, Botany, Forestry, Landscape Architecture or related studies.
AND
Three years experience in Natural Resource management performing duties relating to wildlife inventory, field data collection and habitat restoration and management.
License Requirements:
Possession of a valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, is required at the time of appointment. Failure to maintain a valid California Driver License, Class C or higher constitutes cause for termination from the class in accordance with Civil Service Rules or applicable bargaining unit agreement. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Some positions in this series may require the possession of a Qualified Applicator Certificate for pesticide application.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to: walk, climb, wade, and otherwise travel by foot, carrying equipment and materials weighing as much as 50 pounds over unimproved terrain; work in a stooped or kneeling position for long periods of time to install plants, irrigation systems, collect animal and/or vegetative specimens; bend, stoop, and kneel to inspect and maintain plants, traps, and equipment, and work for prolonged periods of time in various weather conditions. Some positions require the use of respiratory protection equipment; the handling of wild animals; the use of immobilizing drugs, syringes, scalpels, and tissue cores.
Note: The word "experience" referenced in the minimum qualifications means full-time paid experience unless the job announcement states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.
Note: If the minimum qualifications include an educational, certificate/license requirement, applicants must submit proof of requirement (copy of diploma, transcripts, license, or certificate) with the application. Failure to submit proof of requirements may result in disqualification from the examination. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
Probationary Period
The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.

FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)

All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut-off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.

This examination will evaluate the relevance, level, recency, progression and quality of candidate's education, training and experience. The candidate's application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore, the candidate's responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough, detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.

All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their governmentjobs.com inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination.
