About You and this Role
The Dow Chemical Company has an opening for a Meter & Relay Tech at the Freeport, TX location. The purpose of this job is to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the protective relaying, electrical metering, and SCADA systems within Texas Operations.
This job exists because the above mentioned systems are critical for monitoring and controlling Texas Operations Site Electrical Infrastructure for generation, distribution, and transmission of electricity to Production Plants and external power customers. The integrity, dependability, and reliability of the electrical protective relaying systems are tantamount to minimizing damage due to electrical forces by selectively isolating only the areas necessary in the fastest time possible. The successful candidate will be part of the Energy Systems Power Distribution Team.
Responsibilities

  • Areas of responsibilities will include the entire Texas Operations site (i.e. distribution and transmission substations, power plant switch rooms, process plant switch rooms, and power dispatching systems).
  • Attention to detail is a daily requirement due to the potential for system upsets and lost production.
  • Maintain the relay calibration database up to date (monthly accounting).
  • Review and revise M&R one-lines and issue updates.
  • Review a certain number of relaying testing procedures per month.
  • Improve implementation of computer-aided relay testing.
  • Testing and calibration of electromechanical, solid state and microprocessor-based relays.

Requirements
  • A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • A minimum of two years of technical training in electrical theories or a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • A valid U.S. driver license is required.
  • Working knowledge of current transformers (CT) and voltage/potential transformers (VT/PT) circuits and basic relaying circuits.
  • Working knowledge of basic substation configurations (Ring bus, breaker-and-a-half, Main-Tie-Main, etc.)
  • Knowledge and experience with Lockout/Tagout and Electrical Safe Work Permits.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code.
  • Must be comfortable and competent to work with energized control and protection circuits. This is a routine job requirement and expectation.
  • Must be able to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams as well as troubleshoot control circuits from such drawings.
  • Must have good computer skills, being able to perform record keeping functions associated with the work.
  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Skills
  • An Associate of Science degree from an accredited two-year college or equivalent military or civilian technical school background in electricity/electronics is preferred.
  • Prior electric utility experience working with relays and Relaying schemes in transmission and distribution substations is a plus.

Additional Notes
  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work comfortably and safely at elevated heights. Candidates must be familiar with, or willing to undergo training in, the proper usage and maintenance of safety equipment to ensure safe movement and operations at heights.
