Job Description

About us: Beltways is on a mission to accelerate humanity forward with a novel and sustainable mobility system moving pedestrians seamlessly and frictionlessly through airports, venues, and, ultimately, cities. We are an ambitious team of Belters building the world’s fastest, safest, and smartest form of short-range mobility — Accelerating Walkways.

Why this role exists: We are designing the world’s first modular AW (Accelerating Walkway). The Mechanical Engineer will take the technical lead in specifying, designing, and developing Beltways’ next generation AW subassemblies for full commercial integration. These include base conveyor drives, handrail conveyor drives, a power distribution track, entry and exit ramps, and other subsystems that make up the core components of our AW.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Proficiency in operating Autodesk or SolidWorks CAD design tool for generating parts and assemblies, developing concept layouts, collaborating with other team members’ work, and performing various preliminary analysis including loads, dynamic, thermal expansion, and system safety studies.
  • Develop and test mechanical systems and structures.
  • Create subsystem specification documents in compliance with product and system requirements.
  • Distill complex specifications for next generation Accelerating Walkway higher level systems into component and subsystem requirements.
  • Prepare and present detailed designs and critical technical reviews.
  • Design and develop mechanical subsystems, from concept to release, using 3D CAD and create 2D drawings using standard GD&T
  • Identify and resolve system design weaknesses.
  • Design components while taking into consideration: strength of materials, heat transfer principles, friction, design for vibration and harsh environments, tolerances, etc.
  • Implement design tools (e.g., FMEA GD&T, tolerance analysis, FEA, DOE’s, simulated use testing, and statistical analysis)
  • Design and/or integrate sensors for various measurement applications (force, acceleration, pressure, temperature, displacement, etc.)
  • Develop acceptance and qualification test plans utilizing sensors, controllers, environmental chambers, shock, and vibration tables etc., as needed.
  • Perform thermal and/or structural analysis using industry simulation tools.
  • Assist in checking and validating drawings to meet design, manufacturing inspection, and supplier requirements.
  • Assist in creating complete interface control and assembly drawings.
  • Assist in checking and validating that designs meet the requirements of ASME A17.1.
  • Develop manufacturing processes and procedures.
  • Mentor fellow engineers on rigor, analytics and proven engineering standards and practices.
  • Collaborate with members of Beltways team to advance the technical and company culture goals of the company.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent critical and creative thinking skills.
  • Ability to work within a team.
  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics.
  • 5-10 years industry experience, and open to less if experience is relevant.
  • Extensive experience with Autodesk or SolidWorks; Capable in using Autodesk Sim or SolidWorks Simulation is preferred; Experience in PDM strongly preferred.
  • Experience in mobility, automotive or conveyor industries is a plus.
  • Proficient with GD&T (ASME Y-14.5M) design and drawing practices.
  • Solid understanding of engineering principles, system design & analysis (FEA, CFD, thermal).

Outcomes:

  • You will generate concepts or will use already developed concepts and take each system through the development cycle of design reviews, documentation creation, analysis, safety, performance verification and integration with higher level systems.
  • You will be responsible for the development of the critical test equipment and fixtures that support the development effort of the core systems.
  • You will also be performing important aspects of technical lead duties including multiple design & technical interchange reviews and status reviews.
  • You may be assisted by a team of mechanical and automation engineers and will coordinate their time in a way that best meets the company’s needs.
  • Your work will be achieved through collaboration with other technical and non-technical members of the Beltways team.

Compensation:

  • Industry competitive compensation
  • Stock options
  • Health, Vision, Dental benefits
  • 40 hours per week (in person).

Why Beltways:

Belters are changing the world by accelerating how pedestrians move. In pursuing our mission of accelerating humanity, BELTERS Build, Explore, Learn, Trust, Educate, Respect, Sustain.

We are a tight-knit and ambitious team based in Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky. Everyone is valued for their contributions and has a responsibility to both challenge and support the team. We overcome challenges and enjoy victories together.
