Job description

Atomic Machines is creating a smart digital MEMS factory consisting of modular building blocks (each a digital microfactory) that will enable real-time manufacturing of complex devices from CAD and a broad library of input materials.  With physics-informed generative design AI, we will deliver true "text to device," where the prompt is a specification of a desired device and the output is a functional implementation of that device, immediately.  Finally, the other 98% of MEMS devices - micro-robotics, true lab-on-a-chip (not "chip in a lab") microfluidics, tunable antennas, speaker pixels, and much more - that could never be manufactured will be possible, and prototyping and volume manufacturing will occur on the same hardware.  Our first device (which is none of the above) already has significant commercial traction and a very large potential market.

Our engineering offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to join our growing team. This role will contribute to the foundational design of our novel robotic manufacturing platform by developing significant subsystems responsible for the conversion of as-delivered materials to a format compatible with the custom manufacturing platform we are developing. You will gain multidisciplinary experience across Manufacturing Engineering, mechanical design, electrical engineering, vision, robotics, and while working as a part of a fast-paced cross-functional team in an early startup.
What you'll do:
    • Design, develop, and maintain high-level system models for throughput, cost, and performance.
    • Architect equipment infrastructure and manage design/build/test loop with both internal and external resources.
    • Subject designs and prototypes to rigorous testing that verifies performance with appropriate statistical analysis for production-caliber, 24/7 lights-out systems.
    • Own high-level performance of all systems overseen, along with associated managerial work (presentations to Executive staff, interaction with Program Management for timely completion of work, management of and reporting upon internal and external resources).
    • Create CAD models of parts and assemblies, BOMs (bill of materials), detailed drawings, and technical design documentation.
    • Ability to operate and make progress in the face of high levels of ambiguity - must be able to pull the trigger and/or disagree and commit to force progress.
What You'll Need:
    • 7-10 years of relevant industry experience, including design of electromechanical systems and outsourcing of system and/or subsystems to contract manufacturers.
    • Knowledge of a multitude of manufacturing processes; not limited to semiconductor processes, high-volume/low-mix processes, material processing, etc.
    • General materials knowledge: know major classes of materials, their microstructure, processing, and relative pros/cons in their usage.
    • Advanced proficiency with engineering fundamentals, design principles; this likely means significant background with/use of mechanical CAD tools.
    • Be a self-guided learner. The Manufacturing Team includes very experienced engineers who are always ready with ideas and pointers, however, to be successful you must be able to ascend learning curves quickly and with minimal direction.
    • Easily accept and incorporate feedback from all avenues. As an owner of a major subset of the platform function, you will be serving multiple internal and external end-customers to ensure acceptable function of deliverables.
    • Be a team player. Being motivated by team goals and willing to tackle whatever tasks are necessary - no job is  too big or small.
    • Be a maker and be able to show it (speak to experience in previous jobs, working on cars as  a youth, hobby projects, etc.).
    • Experience across multiple disciplines (e.g., mechanical, optical, electronics, software, etc.) is desired but not required.
    • Excellent written & verbal communication and narrative writing skills.Be a self-starter and finisher.
    • Experience in high-volume manufacturing.
    • Experience with laser and/or optical systems.
    • Experience with precision engineering fundamentals.
    • Minimum B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline with demonstrated practical experience.
$160,000 - $240,000 a year
The compensation for this position includes equity and benefits.
