Job description

BioMADE is working to change the United States’ innovation stance for bioindustrial products by creating a network of pilot and intermediate scale facilities so that U. S. innovators can scale, and ultimately produce, bioindustrial products domestically. This position will be responsible for ensuring that this once-in-a-generation opportunity to create biomanufacturing infrastructure, enabled by President Biden’s Executive Order 14081 (https://tinyurl.com/yyjv7t5j) and focused through the Depart of Defense’s Manufacturing Innovation Institutes (https://tinyurl.com/nn7zpzfw), will set our nation on course to have resilient and secure supply chains for the chemicals and materials originating from renewable feedstocks.

The Senior Manufacturing Development Lead will lead the development of the conceptual framework, design, and financial plan for a network of BioMADE pilot facilities to support the scale up of product and processes in bioindustrial manufacturing. The Senior Manufacturing Development Lead will contribute by managing and developing the early phases of pilot facility projects to develop the overall business plan for a specific facility.  This includes working closely with BioMADE’s member organizations and engineering and design consultants to determine the viability of a piloting facility in the long term.

As the network of pilot and intermediate scale facilities comes on-line, the Senior Manufacturing Development Lead will contribute to operating and improving these assets to enable domestic companies to successfully scale and begin production of their innovative products.

This position will partner with the BioMADE manufacturing team and be responsible for a full spectrum of activities associated with the development of a national pilot plant network. This position will regularly interface with BioMADE Members and other stakeholders that provide critical input to the project and will be responsible for creating a strong business plan for a piloting facility.  This business plan would include piloting capabilities, project cost estimates, site selection, and operating cost pro-formas. For the strongest business plans, the project would be selected for funding for construction.  Once funded for construction, the Senior Manufacturing Development Lead could be part of a larger team that manages projects supporting the many aspects of a multi-million-dollar investment for a piloting facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular status meetings with project teams with internal and external stakeholders. Review and approve reports to ensure risks to the project are mitigated and the project is progressing on schedule.
  • Create and manage project plan, schedule, Statements of Work, budget, and funding to meet organizational objectives.
  • Collaborate with the BioMADE Communications and relevant colleagues on internal and external communications.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on project status and milestones to BioMADE stakeholders, committees, Department of Defense, and the broader bioindustrial manufacturing community when appropriate.
  • Review and approve project deliverables, and incorporate action plans into the overall project plan
  • Collaborate with subject-matter experts to guide and support project teams.
  • Conduct site visits to meet with members, vendor, and/or government organizations.
  • Identify project needs for staffing including subject matter experts.
  • Lead projects with a high-level of safety awareness and instill a culture of safety across all related projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
