Job description

Hastings Mutual is currently looking for a Senior Mainframe Programmer Analyst to join our Data and Business Intelligence team! This is a great opportunity for an experienced IT professional to contribute to our company's Mainframe programming and development team. 
 
Position Overview
The Senior Mainframe Programmer Analyst provides effective and efficient mainframe programming skills to support day-to-day company operations as directed. They take the lead role in analyzing, designing, programming, documenting, testing, and implementing solutions for complex business problems and also provide guidance to programmers and project management skills for IT projects. 
 
Position Location & Work Format
 
This position is flexible in its location! We will entertain candidates who reside within our six-state territory (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, or Illinois) to work a remote schedule. Candidates residing within the greater Hastings area will be able to work a hybrid (combination of on-site and work-from-home) schedule as an alternative. 
 
Generally, this position will work within our standard office hours of Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Hastings Mutual may consider candidates in other states to work remotely if elements of their application are strong.  
 
Position Duties & Responsibilities 
 
  • Provides the technical leadership to resolve an end-user request or incident report.
    • Assists the business unit in defining requirements for services.
    • Designs, documents, and recommends mainframe programming solutions.
    • Establishes schedules for analysis, programming, and project completion/implementation.
    • Programs, tests, debugs, and documents approved solutions using mainframe programming.
    • Prepares comprehensive test plans to ensure program performance and efficiency.
    • Coordinates user functional testing with appropriate individuals.
    • Prepares written documentation to guide the deployment of approved solutions throughout the software development cycle.
    • Coordinates implementation of approved solutions with appropriate individuals.
    • Reports progress.
  • Provides on-call support as necessary.
  • Acts as a mentor and technical resource to programmers and Programmer Analysts.
  • Proposes innovative and creative solutions to improve business unit productivity, and/or business results.
  • Provides project leadership and management.
    • When required, directs other Programmer Analysts assigned to work on the project.
  • Develops related insurance business comprehension and technical knowledge.
  • Actively participates in professional development, i.e. continuing education or self-improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.

Candidate Requirements & Qualifications 
 
  • An Associate's or Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience (outlined below)
    • 3-5+ years of experience developing solutions, resolving production issues, and on-call batch cycle job resolution for PMSC/Series II is required. 
    • Experience with the Assembler programming language is required. 
  • Previous experience demonstrated growth and development in the technology and business field preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of COBOL programming or related procedural programming.
  • Certification in General Insurance, AINS designation, or demonstrated insurance experience is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and take the lead role in assignments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of database concepts.
  • General knowledge of ZOS facilities and related utilities.
  • Ability in coordinating activities, analytical reasoning, logical problem solving, and establishing priorities.'
  • Demonstrated excellent listening, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
