The City of Pomona has an exciting promotional opportunity for a Senior Library Assistant (0.60 PBL). The position, under direction, will lead, supervise, and participate in the work of one or more Library Services units or sections, such as Library Loan Services, Information Services, Youth Services, and/or Technology Services. This may include activities and operations relating to circulation, audio-visual, library security, public desks, interlibrary loans, public personal computers, public WiFi, collection development, item cataloging, donations, and research. This position exercises technical and functional supervision over lower level staff.

**This position is a Partial Benefit Library (PBL) classification and will average 24 hours per week (0.60 PBL).
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may qualify. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Education and Experience:
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalency supplemented by specialized course work in library science.
  • Four years of experience working in a public library at the clerical level or above.

Knowledge of: Principles of lead supervision and training. Operations, services, and activities of a Library program. Library databases and other resources the library has available for patrons. Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment. Basic mathematical principles. English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
Skill to: Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software. Type at a speed necessary for successful job perfor­mance.
Ability to: Plan, organize, and review the work of Library Clerks and Library Pages. Provide lead supervision and training to assigned staff. Use computerized Library databases including the computer system. Use the Library catalog. Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records. Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software and copiers. Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public. Meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Lead, plan, and review the work of Library Clerks and Library Pages for assigned Library unit(s) or section(s).
Train assigned employees including in the areas of work methods, techniques, and the use and operation of equipment.
Assist the public in making the most effective use of the Library including handing out program flyers, answering directional questions; and explaining and demonstrating Library policies, procedures and facilities to patrons.
Operate the circulation desk by checking materials in and out, maintaining statistics of library activity, maintaining accurate patron accounts, compiling reports, assisting patrons in placing reserves on materials while utilizing best practices in excellent patron service.
Compile overdue material lists; send notices; establish fines in accordance with Library practices; collect fines and charges for overdue and lost materials, postage, video, and audio books.
Handle patron complaints, problems, and inquiries concerning individual accounts in person and over the telephone; receive, deposit, and account for money in the course of fiscal transactions.
Assist with copy cataloging, editing existing bibliographic records, developing and managing print and digital collections, maintaining statistics of library activity, and other duties as required.
Assist the public in making the most effective use of the library including promoting programs and services, performing reader advisory, helping patrons find items, and answering research questions.
Serve as a liaison alongside the Library Services Manager, between the library, City IT, and technology vendors. Troubleshoot the integrated library system (ILS), library website, electronic databases, public WiFi, digital collection, and other related systems, implementing updates and/or fixes as required.
Prepare daily, hourly, and assignments schedules and create quarterly master schedule for Library Clerks and Library Pages.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to work in a standard library environment; ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, and lift up to 20 lbs.
