TechLaw Consultants, Inc., is a nationwide, employee-owned firm headquartered in Chantilly, VA, and has been in business since 1983. Our environmental consultants help government and commercial clients assess performance, manage risk, implement sustainable remedies, and resolve uncertainty. The Response Engineering and Analytical Contract (REAC) team supports EPA's Emergency Response Team (ERT) in providing 24/7/365 scientific, engineering and logistical analysis and recovery services related to emergencies and natural disasters throughout the country, such as hazardous materials spills and releases, air contamination, and other adverse impacts to the environment.
The Senior Lab Chemist conducts various analyses on air, soil and oil organic matter. This position is a member of the Laboratory Assistance Team (LAT) and is responsible for coordinating and contracting analytical services from subcontract laboratories for REAC projects.
Responsibilities:
- Interpret mass spectral data using libraries to elucidate structures.
- Perform routine operation, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments/equipment.
- Handle and work with hazardous materials, working safely and independently in a chemical laboratory environment.
- Developing and validating methods using GC with various detectors, including FID, PID, and MS.
- Preparation of various samples using techniques including dissolution, liquid-liquid extraction, separatory funnel extraction, soxtherm extraction, and solid phase extraction.
- Ability to travel up to 25% and be available for emergency response situations nationwide.
Qualifications:
- B.S. or B.A. degree in Chemistry or in a closely related scientific discipline is required.
- 8-10 years of experience in an environmental laboratory with experience in Toxic Organic (TO) air methods and/or SW-846 methods for soil, water and oil organic analyses.
- Possess a general knowledge of organic chemistry fundamentals; theoretical understanding of chromatography and mass spectrometry theory; and the ability to understand terminology and principles in order to comply with analytical methods.
- Experience working with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Able to work in a mobile lab setting.
- Possess a current Medical Certification or be able to obtain one.
