Job Description:

Schnabel Engineering is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to support our growing business. Qualified candidates will be well-rounded, organized problem solvers with an interest in managing complex projects, working within a team of skilled engineers, and developing younger staff. The qualified candidate should possess experience in the application of soil mechanics fundamentals and   practice of Geotechnical Engineering for design of deep foundations, spread foundations, retaining walls, embankments, slope stability, seepage and consolidation, and ground improvement , particularly on water resources and transportation infrastructure projects.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop Geotechnical Engineering scope of services and fee estimates
  • Planning and oversight of geotechnical subsurface explorations
  • Manage/review geotechnical and construction phase observation and testing field work performed by others
  • Assign, review and interpret geotechnical laboratory tests
  • Perform/review Geotechnical Engineering analyses and calculations
  • Develop Geotechnical Engineering recommendations, and write Geotechnical Engineering reports
  • Perform project management activities including communicating resource needs, managing client expectations, planning and delegating work, management of project budgets, invoicing and backlog reporting
  • Manage client relationships and business development opportunities
  • Manage and mentor junior engineers, geologists and technicians commensurate with experience level
  • Work as a team member within the office and across the business units in other Schnabel offices to effectively balance workload among available resources

 Required Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (in either GA, SC, NC, FL) and with the ability to obtain licensure by comity (e.g. NCEES record)
  • 10+ years of relevant professional experience in consulting Geotechnical Engineering
  • Willingness and ability to travel
  • AutoCAD and GIS skills suitable for developing geotechnical deliverables
  • Proficiency with Geotechnical Engineering software such as LPILE, GROUP, APILE and SHAFT, GeoStudio, Settle3D and FoSSA, CPeT-IT, CLiq, OpenGround, or similar programs  
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Strong work ethic and a desire for continual self-improvement
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment
  • Confidence and independence, with a shared sense of responsibility

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering (geotechnical focus).
  • Senior project management experience for a variety of transportation projects
  • Knowledge of the transportation market in the southeastern USA, and established client relationships
  • Experience with transportation agency policies, procedures and requirements (e.g. GDOT, SCDOT, NCDOT, FDOT)
  • Ability to support geotechnical aspects of dam and tunnel engineering projects
  • Geo-structural engineering skills a plus

  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment screening
