Job description

This is a part-time or temporary non-benefited position.

Description & Details:This position is for a supervisory crewmember on the North Dakota Forest Service’s Fire Management Program wildland firefighting team. Senior Firefighters must be able to lead less experienced crew members while engaging in fire suppression and wildland fire related activities, including fire prevention, patrol and prescribed burning. Senior firefighters will be assigned to a Type 3 or Type 6 Wildland Engine, and will assist the Engine Captain with crew supervision. Senior Firefighters are expected to continue to develop their leadership and wildland firefighting skills through provided training and work experience. When not engaged in fire suppression duties, a Senior Firefighter will complete hazardous fuels mitigation projects. During fuels project work, Senior Firefighters will assist with crew supervision, operate chainsaws to chop brush and fell small trees. Senior Firefighter will clean, recondition, and store tools and equipment, and be responsible for facility maintenance and cleaning.

This is an hourly position with paid overtime. This includes paid travel and lodging while working away from Bismarck and paid physical training time (on-site gym) when working in Bismarck. Crew members will have opportunities to advance NWCG qualifications and attend NWCG sponsored trainings.

Duties:

  • Assist Engine Captain in supervision and act as supervisor when assigned.
  • Respond to fire emergencies as requested.
  • Directs others in operation and use of firefighting equipment and provide on the job instruction to crewmembers.
  • Aid in programing radios and provide training in proper radio use to crewmembers.
  • Assist fire management staff in following thinning guidelines on hazardous fuels reduction prescriptions on private and NDFS land.
  • Operate/maintain motor vehicles including cars, trucks, tractors, UTVs, skid steers and fire engines in a safe manner.
  • Operate/maintain power tools, hand tools, and equipment such as chainsaws.
  • Instruct and train crewmembers in basic fire behavior.
  • Ensure work areas, vehicles, and equipment are clean and maintained.
  • Communicate instructions and concerns within the chain of command.
  • Report injuries and accidents. Recommend action to prevent recurrence.
  • Ensure personal protective equipment is provided and used by all crewmembers.
  • Provide example to crewmembers regarding safety, performance and behavior.
  • Participate as part of crew leadership.
  • Assist with timesheets/travel vouchers and fire documentation.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:This is an arduous duty position requiring regular, protracted periods of considerable exertion. Crew members may be required to work under hazardous conditions encountered in prescribed burning and fire suppression operations (excessive heat, smoke, dust, rough terrain, sharp hand tools, motorized equipment, and poisonous snakes and insects), including prolonged standing, walking over uneven, rocky or swampy ground, recurrent bending, reaching, lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds, and other strenuous activities requiring good agility and dexterity. Many of these same conditions will prevail during other regular field activities. Crew members must wear protective clothing and other safety equipment. The employee must meet and maintain the arduous physical requirements established for this position, as evidenced by passing the standardized fitness test for arduous positions approved by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group for wildland fire agencies.

Advertised Pay: $23.42 hourly

Minimum Qualifications:

  • NWCG Fire Fighter Type 1 qualification
  • NWCG Type 5 Incident Commander qualification
  • Successful completion of Work Capacity Test at Arduous level
  • Valid Driver’s license

NDFS provides technical assistance relating to the management of private forest lands, state forest lands, urban and community forests, tree planting, forest health, and wildfire protection. The agency also operates a forest tree nursery and manages its own state forest lands. The Fire Management Program protects lives, property and natural resources by providing fire suppression assistance, training, and equipment to 378 ND fire departments, and by responding to fire suppression assistance requests nationally when conditions in ND allow.
