Summary
Responsible for cost estimates based on proposal data sheets. Determines proper overhead and profit margins in conjunction with Vice President and current company policy. The estimator works with commercially sensitive and confidential information. Strict adherence to company policy on confidentiality is a fundamental requirement of this position.

What you'll do
- As Estimator in a product line group, has full responsibility for project estimates.
- Work with the sales engineer and chief mechanical engineer to estimate equipment weight information.
- Together with the responsible sales engineer, recommend equipment references to be used as cost basis.
- Use SMS business systems to create estimates, as well as charts and diagrams as required.
- Work with the overall corporate team in further development of internal estimating software and procedures.
- Work up costs for installation and materials for pipe, equipment, structural steel, etc. Monitor progress of vendor responses to inquiries.
- Assist sales and proposal engineers in preparing proposals.
- Works with purchasing and vendors to solicit equipment quotations.
- Works with purchasing to develop potential vendors.
- Domestic and international business travel as required.
- Track and update corporate directives regarding estimating procedures.
- Sales calls and attends sales functions, as required
- Work with team members in the proposal stage
- Inter-departmental or inter-company contacts concerning proposals
- Assist sales engineers in presenting detailed estimates to Vice President and/or senior management for approval
What you'll need
- Associate degree or higher in an engineering or business discipline or appropriate work experience required.
- A minimum of five (5) years in the steel or similar heavy industry with knowledge in equipment design fabrication, machining and / or procurement.
- Strong written, verbal and computer skills required.
- Must be able to read engineering drawings and bills of material.
- Ability to interact with vendors and customers, as required.
- Candidates must be self-motivated and display creativity, strong problem-solving skills, and work well in a diverse team environment
- Excellent computer skills, with a strong emphasis on Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
