Scope of Work:

Under the direction of the Human Resources Manager, supervises and manages the employee and Labor Relations program of the Company. The Employee and Labor Relations Specialist is responsible for promoting team member welfare, including resolving employee relations issues and managing day-to-day HR functions. They are also responsible for researching and developing a strong understanding of unions and applicable laws in order to assist the Company’s team members and leaders with issues or questions regarding employment and labor laws.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the Company point of contact for HQ regarding matters pertaining to labor and employee relations; provides necessary reports to HQ regarding all collective bargaining agreement and union matters.
  • Collaborates with and reports to the HR manager on labor matters to help develop appropriate courses of action and strategy.
  • Collaborates with HR manager regarding recommendations to the policies and procedures concerning employee relations and personal practices.
  • Researches and develops subject matter expertise on unions which may become involved with the Company; develops reports and presentations for HQs as necessary.
  • Researches, analyzes, interprets, and maintains currency on recent case, state, and federal law changes; monitors law updates.
  • Provides specialized, professional consultation and training on employee relations and Labor Relations to managers, employees, and Human Resources professionals, to include consultation on employee disciplinary issues.
  • Investigates potential grievances and policy violations and advises the Human Resources Manager on opportunities for remediation/prevention of workplace issues that impact morale, productivity and organizational performance, as appropriate to the position; determines, gathers, and analyzes evidentiary information necessary to evaluate compliance and policy issues.
  • Recommends process improvements to enhance transparency and accuracy of personnel processes and information.
  • Provides guidance, expert interpretation of policy, and training to the Company to minimize potential adverse impact of compliance issues and complaints, and to resolve disputes at the lowest administrative level.
  • Develops and conducts or participates in specialized presentations and training, covering operational and/or technical HR-related information for specified areas of expertise.
  • Anticipates and advises Management and Human Resources Manager of the impact strategic or operational decisions will have upon employee and Labor Relations and makes recommendations that avoid and/or minimize labor disputes.
  • Identifies training opportunities, develops training materials, and collaborates with Supervisors, Human Resources and training committee members to effectively manage job safety work practices.

Qualifications and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Industrial and Labor Relations, Business Administration, Psychology or related fields. Advanced degree or other specialized training in labor/employee relations a plus.
  • 5+ years of direct experience in employee relations, Labor Relations in a union manufacturing environment.
  • PHR certification required or obtainable within one (1) year of hire.
  • Knowledge of major U.S. Employee Relations-related policies, sensing strategies.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Labor and Employment Laws.
  • Knowledge of federal and state agencies and regulations which govern employment.
  • Experience conducting investigations, managing, and resolving conflicts.
  • Experience providing guidance and interpretation of HR policies and procedures to team members and management.
  • Strong interpersonal, investigative, and mediation skills with the ability to establish partnerships with senior leaders and across organizational lines.
  • Ability to analyze oral and written information quickly and accurately and make decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of Authority personnel and outside contacts.
  • Able to handle confidential information in a mature and professional manner.
