Butlr is on a mission to make the built environment people-aware. We live and work in houses and buildings that aren't aware of their inhabitants. We heat and cool spaces when no one is in them, clean areas that haven't been used, and lease office space. Our vision is to enable smarter buildings and increase the quality of life.
Spun out of the MIT Media Lab in 2019 with offices in Silicon Valley and Boston, Butlr was founded by Forbes 30 Under 30 entrepreneurs Honghao Deng and Jiani Zeng. Butlr's People Sensing Platform anonymously infers human presence and activity via its thermal, wireless sensors to deliver rich spatial insights at a fraction of the cost and time of legacy alternatives.
Since 2019, we have been working with dozens of top occupiers, landlords, and service providers in North America, Europe, and Asia, in addition to partners in senior living and retail. We are operating in three of the FANG companies, along with some of the largest brands in the world. As we've been growing considerably yearly, we're hiring talented and passionate people to join our team to help us continue our growth.
About the Role:
We're expanding and need a dedicated engineer to spearhead our IoT initiatives, ensuring robust, scalable, and secure systems. The successful candidate will fully integrate our systems with an IoT platform like AWS IoT, refine our CI/CD pipeline for better efficiency, and lead the charge in innovative IoT solutions, significantly enhancing our product offerings, customer experience, and visibility into our fleet health. This role is a unique opportunity to be at the cutting edge of IoT and embedded systems within Butlr, a company experiencing rapid growth in the IoT space. Your work in leading the design and implementation of our remote access and update systems will be pivotal in enhancing the reliability and efficiency of our products, directly impacting our success and your professional growth.
Requirements
  • BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Electrical, Computer or other engineering discipline, preferably with a specialization in embedded systems or robotics.
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in embedded development
  • Experience with embedded operating systems, kernel development, or device drivers on multi-core systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and debug complex issues in distributed systems.
  • Experience in developing testable code and supporting test-driven development.
  • Strong debugging skills and proven ability to resolve challenging technical problems.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, C, Rust, or C++
  • Familiarity with cloud-based IoT platforms like AWS IoT for device management and data processing.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Optional: Knowledge of networking, communications systems, and data security to enhance the safety and reliability of IoT solutions.
  • Optional: Understanding of RF and wireless communications technologies like Bluetooth.
  • Optional: Experience with electrical or mechanical test harnesses, control code, and fixture design to assist in the development and troubleshooting of IoT device

Location: This is a remote position however we have locations in San Francisco and Boston.
Salary: $140,000-160,000 base salary
