Department of Revenue is recruiting for a Senior Economist - Economist 4 position. We are looking for talented, detail-oriented individual to join our Director's Office in the Research Section. This position is headquartered in our Salem office; however, the successful candidate may be eligible for in state hybrid work. Hybrid work consists of performing duties onsite in a standard office environment and working remotely.
In order to be considered for Department of Revenue recruitments, you must reside within (or be willing to relocate to) the state of Oregon.
What You Will Be Doing
Below is a sampling of job duties. It is not meant to encompass all duties.
  • Assesses the need for revenue information and develops information about the state's tax system in response to specific and general inquiries. This position is responsible for describing the results of this analysis to the Governor's Office, legislature, media, and others.
  • Analyzes existing or proposed tax laws to make an independent determination of their impact on revenue and to provide statistical summaries for public release. Makes assumptions with respect to the application of economic theory and statistical methods that directly impact statewide or local tax programs and revenues.
  • Assists the agency in its operations by providing analytical support and using knowledge of the department's information systems to address operational issues.
  • Plans and leads both one-time and recurrent research studies relating to factors that influence revenue flows to the department's tax programs, including studies on taxpayer behavior and the influence of the department's enforcement and administrative activities.

This Is What You Need To Qualify
A Master's degree in economics or a related field and four years experience doing economic research or econometric forecasting; OR
A Ph.D. in economics or a related field and one-year experience doing economic research.
Note: certain positions may require a Ph.D. in a specific economic specialty, and be decided by the appointing authority at the time of recruitment based on the position requirements.
The ideal candidate will possess the following desired skills and attributes:
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles of economic analysis, forecasting, and data analytics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with complicated and messy real-world data.
  • Experience with data analysis and querying software, such as SSMS, R, or SAS.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and requests for information that have ambiguous aspects.
  • Experience with analyzing the impacts of law changes and policy decisions, and forecasting the impacts on programs.
