GENERAL INFORMATION

Work Schedule: Season starts May 18th through Mid-September 2023 weather permitting. Candidates should expect to travel to Seldovia several weeks prior to the season start in order to participate in training, drills, and inspections. Check ferry schedule at http://seldoviabayferry.com/
Position Overview
The Senior Deckhand is responsible for supervising the deckhands and acting as the team leader in daily activities and to any emergencies on board. He or she will be able to assist the Captain in the operation of the vessel and will be able to operate the vessel in the event the Captain becomes incapacitated.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Direct and work alongside deckhands in daily vessel operations.
- Participate in safety drills and training.
- Respond as an “On-Scene Leader” to all vessel emergencies.
- Must be familiar with emergency procedures including Man Overboard, Fire, Abandon Ship, Foul Weather, Medical Emergencies, etc.
- Seamanship duties to include basic navigation, radio operation, radar familiarity.
- Line handling and knots, crane and rigging, docking and undocking procedures.
- Understanding of navigational equipment, engine alarms, visual indicators, controls, gauges, and communication equipment.
- Experience with diesel engines and auxiliary machinery, steering systems, refueling techniques,
- Safety duties to include emergency protocols such as crowd control, casualty control, first aid, and CPR.
- Oversee deck operations: loading and discharging of passengers, light freight and cargo.
- Actively engage passengers to provide outstanding service.
- Ensure maintenance, cleanliness, and appearance of vessel meets highest standard
- Perform vessel maintenance in accordance with preventative maintenance schedules.
- Regularly inspect for environmental, safety, and health deficiencies on a schedule. Report all deficiencies to the Captain and carry out corrective actions.
- Accurately perform passenger boarding and disembarking log entries for USCG.
- Must be able to learn each dock/port, and conditions routinely encountered (i.e. fog, fishing areas, driftwood, etc.)
- Must possess working knowledge of basic deck equipment and machinery
- Stand watch and carry out other duties as assigned by the Captain.
Specifications/Requirements
- Merchant Mariner Credential 25 -100 ton, preferred but not required
- Endorsements: Mate / Able Bodied / Ordinary Seaman, preferred but not required
- Practical time at the helm under the supervision of the Captain or Chief Mate.
- Deckhand experience on passenger vessels required
- CPR /First Aid /AED – May be offered by SVT
- Current Merchant Mariner Physical required
- Drug Consortium / Random drug testing enrollment (with SVT) required
- Complete background check required
- STCW
- Understanding of Rules of the Road: Near Coastal and Inland waterways.
- Must be at least 18+
- Ability to conduct emergency crowd control measures.
- Demonstrated leadership and willingness to work.
- Reliability and trustworthiness
- Must be able to perform basic arithmetic.
Physical Demands
- Must be qualified as to sight, hearing, and physical condition to perform all duties
- Must be physically able to perform all duties associated with the protection and evacuation of passengers during an emergency.
- Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors and subject to varying weather conditions.
