Corteva Agriscience has an exciting opening for a highly motivated Senior Data Scientist-Production Research to drive advanced analytics and continuous improvement in Global Seed Operations (GSO). The successful candidate will join a strong, globally distributed research team that combines agronomic methods and innovative data analysis to improve productivity, deliver genetic gain, and optimize seed production. Through this role they will contribute the next generation of analytical insights and digital solutions to drive decision making and optimize productivity. They will apply scientific principles and data science techniques including statistics and machine learning to create and deliver insights and high value solutions. The successful candidate will work extensively with Global Seed Operations and will also collaborate End-to-End with Seed Product Development, Commercial, and other Corteva teams to achieve success.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities developing digital workflows, developing tools, and application of data science to improve business processes and solve problems. The candidate will have a broad skillset covering multiple technologies and practical working knowledge in Data Science and scientific programming techniques. Ideally, the candidate will have additional and specific experience with large-scale agricultural experimental design, seed product development processes, GxExM statistical analysis techniques, and with demonstrated ability to deliver innovative digital work products into applied solutions. The preferred location for this position is in Des Moines IA, with relocation supported. An outstanding candidate located remotely would be considered, with periodic travel needed to Des Moines.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead collaborations with business leaders, strategic planners, scientists, and production teams to discover, identify, and understand business needs.
  • Build prototypic solutions with rapid stakeholder feedback and iterate as needed to deliver impactful digital solutions which add tangible value for Corteva.
  • Proactively ask questions, pioneer new concepts, disrupt the status quo, develop, and support novel prototype data science solutions.
  • Develop and deploy machine learning/statistical models and web applications to solve business problems / extract insights / forecast future production outcomes with both large and small data sets.
  • Build, deploy, and support production data sets towards building analytical pipelines to serve known business process and\or discover new opportunities.
  • Provide specific recommendations to operations teams regarding data collection requirements to maximize analytical outcomes and decision making
  • Build, deploy, and support production data sets for consumption by others according to governance rules and process.
  • Contribute, troubleshoot, and maintain microservice APIs, web applications, or other software solutions.
  • Create well-structured, extensible code along with unit and integration tests.
  • Take an active part in the code review process by providing thoughtful feedback to colleagues and open to receiving constructive feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Provide expertise and input to the design, analysis, reporting and interpretation of operations data
  • Communicate ideas and outcomes (verbal, written, presentation, and data visualization) with the ability to work collaboratively on a team, as an individual contributor, or as project leader
  • Leverage subject matter expertise, data engineering resources, capabilities, and best practices from other team members and broader Corteva when appropriate
Qualifications

What Skills You Need:

  • M.S. with 5+ years' experience or Ph.D. with 3+ years' experience (preferred) in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Plant Breeding, Plant Physiology, Agronomy, Soil Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Genomics, Computational Physics, Operations Research, Geospatial Sciences, Remote Sensing Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Vision, or related scientific discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience building and deploying data science applications, solutions, or insights to solve problems using machine learning, deep learning, statistical methodology, crop models, and/or simulation/optimization modeling. Experience with high performance computing and cloud technologies including AWS, Azure, Kubernetes is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience with frontend application and backend infrastructure development. Creating and consuming API services, web application development, and\or mobile development is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating analytical insights, interpretations and conclusions of data analysis projects including the confidence of predictions to improve business decisions and/or influence strategic direction to drive action.
  • Strong scientific programming experience with at least one of (Python, R, C++). Proficient with SQL and database operations. Experience in additional programming languages and technologies, NoSQL, cloud-based CI/CD, Terraform, React, TypeScript, and geospatial technologies is a plus.
  • Ability to independently interpret business processes & needs into data science action, workflows, and solutions by asking the right questions and engaging via rapid iterative development and frequent stakeholder feedback.
  • Leverage subject matter expertise, data engineering resources, capabilities, and best practices from other team members and broader Corteva when appropriate.
  • Ability to function successfully both independently and in a high-performing team and to facilitate complex projects across diverse internal and external groups is necessary.
  • Experience creating applications to analyze and summarize information for end users
  • Ability to design and deliver cost-effective, elegant, robust, and scalable digital solutions
  • Strong organizational, critical thinking, problem solving skills, flexibility, and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and be a highly credible team player that exhibits professional working style and strong interpersonal skills.
