Job description

We are seeking an experienced Data Scientist to help us develop and improve an innovative software product that uses deep learning to detect and classify types of pavement distress.  Working with our Pavement Technology Solutions group and our data teams, you will play a critical role in helping to advance our data science capabilities across the organization.
General Responsibilities:
In this position you will take a technical leadership role in the development of Terracon's pavement evaluation software product, Pave-AI. You will be responsible for learning and documenting all aspects of this product, including data capture, image pre-processing, annotation, processing, image segmentation, model training, and model output evaluation. You are also expected to provide feedback for continuous improvement of the process, product, and roadmap. You will be working on a collaborative team with support from other data analysts, Data Scientists, and data architects to enable your mission.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Document existing workflow, data processing, and deep learning model.
  • Preprocess image and annotation data using existing libraries.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations for process and model improvement.
  • Review and improve annotation procedure for model training.
  • Develop appropriate data augmentation procedures to improve model training.
  • Automate data processing and ETL workflows.
  • Perform model training and measure training results.
  • Improve model training using hyperparameter tuning and measurement/analysis of results.
  • Develop insightful analytics of model evaluation and tuning results.
  • Develop post-processing tools to improve the usability of core model results.
  • Work with Data Architects to review and optimize cloud infrastructure.
  • Collaborate across the Terracon data team to improve our data science capability.
  • Mentor other data professionals.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, computer science, or related technical discipline and 7-year relevant experience. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 11 years' related experience.
  • Master's degree is preferred.
  • Experience in applying statistics, machine learning, predictive modeling, and advanced mathematics to solve complex problems.
  • Proficiency in software development with experience using python and other programming languages, image processing libraries, and deep learning platforms.
