About the team and position

Have you ever wished the analytics projects you worked on could have visible and tangible benefits?  The Production Analytics team owns advanced analytics (data science, optimization, data mining, etc.) in Carvana's vertically integrated vehicle inspection and reconditioning centers.  Our team can walk through these centers and see our work in action.

Join us as we harness the power of Snowflake, revolutionizing our data and analytics landscape. As a Senior Data Engineer, you will play an instrumental role in this transformation. Your responsibility extends beyond mere collection and curation of data into Snowflake - you will help shape and mold data to empower our team and operational teams.  You'll also be a vital part of the development of our advanced machine learning models. From building robust data pipelines and developing APIs to strategizing training data queries and managing data featurization, you will be at the heart of it all.

So, if you're a dynamic individual who is ready to navigate the intricacies of large-scale data systems and leave a significant imprint on our digital transformation, then this is the opportunity for you.

What you'll be doing

  • Collect and curate data from various sources, transforming it into an optimized format for our Snowflake database
  • Develop, maintain, and support robust data pipelines and APIs to ensure the smooth operation of our machine learning model development
  • Formulate precise training data queries and manage data featurization processes to enhance the performance of our machine learning models
  • Engage in team discussions, contributing your expertise to design sessions and code reviews
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, product engineers, and analysts, driving the use of data across all operations
  • Identify and implement best practices in Data Engineering both internally and externally, continuously advancing our data infrastructure
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues, liaising with end users and other IT teams to mitigate risks where necessary
  • Carry out other responsibilities as assigned, adapting to evolving business needs and priorities

What you should have

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field is essential, though a Master's degree or higher is highly desirable.
  • Specific expertise in collecting and curating data into Snowflake. This is the cornerstone of the role, and you should be able to handle this responsibility with minimal oversight.
  • A proven track record with 2+ years of experience in utilizing and configuring SQL and relational databases to your advantage.
  • Proficiency in using Python and SQL for executing complex data processing tasks is a must.
  • Experience in creating APIs like Python's FastAPI and leveraging APIs as a data source.
  • Familiarity with Cloud-based data processing services like Google Cloud Platform, AWS, or Azure.
  • Experience in working with containerized code (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Comfortable with Git-based revision control, branching, and pull requests - you know your way around version control.
  • A relentless drive to push projects into production.
  • Exceptional communication skills that enable you to convey complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A keen interest in implementing industry best practices and staying ahead of the curve.
  • An attitude that rocks.

It would be great if you also had

  • Experience using revision control systems with Snowflake.
  • Experience in building web applications, particularly those related to data processing or visualization.
  • A working knowledge of machine learning principles and techniques.
  • Hands-on experience in data analysis and visualization tools such as Tableau, Bokeh, HoloViews, Sigma, Grafana, Streamlit, etc.
  • Practical experience with DevOps principles, especially in creating and maintaining code deployment pipelines.
  • Exposure to a manufacturing setting, providing a practical understanding of its unique challenges and demands.
