Overview:  
At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, cloud computing continues to allow us to modernize and consolidate IT infrastructure, automate workloads, and pursue next-generation innovation. To continue this transformation, we’re seeking an experienced Cloud Engineer with expertise in the strategy, design, development, and implementation of large-scale projects in the cloud. The ideal candidate is experienced in cloud-based tech, with a firm grasp of emerging technologies, platforms, and applications, and ability to customize them to help our business become more secure and efficient. Extensive knowledge of cloud maintenance, experience managing staff, and advanced industry knowledge is key to keeping us on the cutting edge. From day one, you’ll have an immediate impact on the day-to-day efficiency of our IT operations, and an ongoing impact on our overall growth.  Experience withAmazon Web Services (AWS) is required. Experience withGoogle Cloud Platform (GCP) and Azure is preferred.

 

Objectives of this Role:

  • Work in tandem with our engineering team to identify and implement the most optimal cloud-based solutions for the company.
  • Define and document best practices and strategies regarding application deployment and infrastructure maintenance.
  • Provide guidance, thought leadership, and mentorship to development teams to build cloud competencies.
  • Ensure application performance, uptime, and scale, maintaining high standards of code quality and thoughtful design
  • Manage cloud environments in accordance with company and Federal security guidelines.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Cloud Operations Management:
    • Provide technical expertise in cloud service categories such as PaaS/SaaS/IaaS.
    • Design, build, maintain, document, and automate technical processes and operations using VMWare vCenter and vSphere, Azure Virtual Machine, AWS EC2, and Google Compute Engine. 
    • Implement configuration and deployment automation towards improving functionality, availability, and manageability of our enterprise cloud offerings. Design, implement, and test disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity architecture.
    • Monitor and maintain multiple environments based on client requirements.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Provide continually improving set of software and systems engineering practices  for a frictionless IT environment.

  • Communications:
    • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, written, presentation, leadership, collaboration, facilitation and negotiation skills and the ability to interact with all levels of internal and external stakeholders. Cultivate strong relationships with industry experts. 
    • Troubleshoot incidents, identify root cause, fix, and document problems, and implement preventive measures.
    • Educate teams on the implementation of new cloud-based initiatives, providing associated training as required.
    • Employ exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to see and solve issues before they affect business productivity.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, system analysis or related field of study, along with 8+ years of cloud technology experience.
  • Experience with Amazon Web Service (AWS).
  • Experience with Linux operating systems.
  • Demonstrated cloud computing experience.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (firewalls, load balancers, DNS, DHCP) and various virtualization technologies, including VMWare vCenter and vSphere.
  • Experience in scripting languages such as Terraform, Powershell, CloudFormation, Ansible Shell Scripting, Python, Ruby, PERL Scripting

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in business, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, system analysis or related field of study.
  • Substantial knowledge of Cloud software, application, data storage, systems engineering.
  • Experience in several of the following areas: database architecture, ETL, business intelligence, big data, machine learning, advanced analytics.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams of business analysts, developers, data scientists, and subject matter experts
  • Experience with GCP and/or Azure
  • Understanding of authentication and authorization, identity and access management.
  • Familiarity of deployments in a hybrid cloud environment including data challenges with solution deployment across multiple clouds.
  • Ability to work on challenging issues independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language.
  • Strong problem-solving, verbal and written communications skills.
  • AWS certifications

  • GCP certifications

 

Special Requirements:

  • Visa Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
