The Facility: Gunter Air Force Base
Gunter AFB is an annex of Maxwell AFB in the northeast suburbs of Montgomery, AL. Until 1992 it was known as Gunter Air Force Base or Gunter Air Force Station. It has been a military training base since its opening in 1940. Gunter Annex is a subordinate installation under the administration of the 42d Air Base Wing at nearby Maxwell Air Force Base .

It is the home of the Business and Enterprise Systems (BES) Directorate. The BES provides and supports secure combat information systems and networks for the United States Air Force, the Department of Defense and other Federal Government Agencies.

At Gunter Annex, their Router, Boundary Protection, and DNS Teams oversee an enterprise DoD environment supporting the USAF that requires a unique and dynamic skill set that is expected to complete associated training programs and/or actively pursue professional development/cross-training opportunities. All team members expected to provide continuity for 24/7/365 operations regardless of their current assigned shift. Appropriate compensations/accommodations will be made to address situations that require a long-term commitment to a non-standard shift or schedule.
Technical Expertise:
  • Engineering:
    • Plan, track, design, validate, implement, and troubleshoot major network projects. These projects are typically integrations or migrations.
  • Must be able to develop network designs and solutions that meet all requirements and restraints.
    • Must be able to write implementation plans whose target audiences range from executive level leadership to low level technical integrators. The level of detail must be sufficient per target audience.
  • Expert-Level Network Operations:
    • Maintain a defense-in-depth security policy posture across all IPS devices at all times.
      • Identify unknown or unauthorized sources which attempt to access the AFNet and, when such attempts occur, participate in strategy development and implement risk mitigation.
      • Perform complex analytics on network security systems to protect the assets from compromise, data loss, and other requirements.
  • Tier 3 Incident Response:
    • Must be able to troubleshoot and resolve difficult problems that are escalated from tier 1 and 2 network operators.
    • Show dedication to process improvement and network automation and report to leadership when advertised capabilities aren't providing the support necessary to reduce human interaction.
  • Network Operations:
    • Manage all network security devices across the WAN, to include enterprise-wide functions for firewall, proxies, load balancers, IDS/IPS, SSL decryption, VPNs, and malicious code response.
    • Assist on-site LAN engineers with troubleshooting support of network equipment and installation of new hardware
    • Perform minor and major operating system upgrades on all network security devices.
  • Enterprise network troubleshooting:
    • Must work with all corresponding technical support teams as required to resolve network traffic concerns.
    • Utilize monitoring tools and log collectors to provide in-depth analysis on traffic anomalies and issues.
    • Work network issues to resolution for customers via trouble tickets, change requests, and phone calls, in direct support with base-level, NOSC-level, and DISA counterparts.
    • Receive inbound calls from enterprise customers and work with other external NOCs to troubleshoot and resolve policy configuration issues.
  • Perform packet capture analysis as required .
  • Device Management:
    • Experience configuring and managing IDS, Firewalls and other network security platforms
  • Device and traffic monitoring:
    • Performs daily health checks to acknowledge system level faults and begin the process of resolution.
    • Utilizes monitoring tools and log collectors to begin initial analysis on network traffic, including (but not limited to) Splunk, Schnozz, ELK, InfoVista, and NIKSUN.
  • Flexible schedule as needed:
    • This position requires rotating weekends, 24x7 shift support, and on call duties
    • It may be required to come in earlier than normal, stay later than normal, or work off shifts to meet contract requirements or to support network changes during off peak maintenance windows.
  • Management Skills:
    • Manage a small team of personnel.
    • Manage team schedules (Days, Swings and Mid Shifts).
    • Conduct or provide necessary training to team members within Boundary as needed.
    • Report directly to the Operations Manager.
    • Attend meetings with upper management when necessary.
    • Ability to brief the customer and upper management on activities taking place within Boundary as needed.
    • Maintain, manage and support the boundary team.
Qualifications
Experience and Education
  • Position minimum requirements: 5-7 years
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • A professional level network security OS certification (i.e. PCNSE or equivalent) and CompTIA Security+ or better security certification.
  • DoD Secret level security clearance.
