Job Summary

Orientation Programs at Purdue University facilitate experiences where new undergraduate students are welcomed "All Aboard Purdue," a four-step process to start their journey as Boilermakers. The four steps are interconnected to help transition incoming undergraduate students to campus each year. 

 

Reporting to Purdue's Director of Orientation Programs, the inaugural Senior Assistant Director will lead the development and implementation of our team's next giant leap: Boiler Gold Rush in Indianapolis. With a history of over 30 years in West Lafayette, serving over 100,000 students, Boiler Gold Rush has a tradition of welcoming new students to Purdue. This role will have the unique opportunity to incorporate the tradition and history of Purdue University and Boiler Gold Rush for new students while reimagining the student experience at Purdue's first comprehensive urban campus. 

 

This position joins a dedicated team of staff in Orientation Programs, committed to innovating and continuously moving programs and experiences forward for new students and staff. This team actively keeps diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at the forefront of their work. Seeking to understand the experiences of students, with the desire to think critically and thoughtfully about supporting the mission of introducing and connecting all new undergraduate students to Purdue University, is critical in this role. This staff member will also be a critical part of the Teaching and Learning Programs team in Indianapolis, and an active member of the Student Success Programs department. 

 

The Senior Assistant Director for Orientation Programs in Indianapolis will supervise one professional staff and synchronize onboarding efforts with the Orientation Programs staff at Purdue University in West Lafayette, and counterparts at IU-Indianapolis. This staff member will be successful in the role by effectively and independently collaborating with many partners, creating authentic relationships across campus and in the community to produce successful orientation programming. This staff member must have the ability to be agile in navigating between supporting strategic vision and operating within the detailed complexities of program and event management. 

 

This staff member is a recognized subject matter expert working under limited oversight to plan, prepare, and execute programs in support of a successful orienting and onboarding experience for new undergraduate students in Indianapolis. They will operate the appropriate use of university, revenue-generated, and gift funds in support of program goals and work in-person on campus in Indianapolis, Indiana. The nature of work in orientation is cyclical and has peak seasons, which sometimes require staff members to work some nights and weekends, and at times may give the opportunity for flexibility and hybrid work.

  • The targeted annual salary range for this position is $60,000 - $67,000
  • Purdue will also provide:

As Senior Assistant Director, you should have:

 

  • Master's Degree
  • Four years working in a university setting (An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered)
  • Understanding of and appreciation for inclusion, including the ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and identities
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and project management skills
  • Ability to balance interruptions, multiple and varied tasks, and confidential information with discretion
  • Ability to take the initiative to solve problems, assume responsibility, establish, and maintain quality standards
  • Ability to work in a flexible, fast-paced, positive team atmosphere

 

As Senior Assistant Director, you would bring:

  • Four years working in a complex or college orientation/first-year program setting
  • Experience supervising full-time staff and/or graduate students
  • Experience managing major/complex projects, including event planning and management
