JOB TITLE: Senior ARMY JROTC Instructor
WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt
FUNDING SOURCE: Local
REPORTS TO: Campus Principal
PAY GRADE: Teacher Salary (187 days) + 30 Days
DEPARTMENT: Campus
DATE REVISED: May 2023
This position is eligible for a Chapter 21 contract.
PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Senior Army Instructor (SAI) instructs and directs all instructional and operational activities of the high school JROTC Department. Serves as the Department Chairperson and Chief Instructor of the JROTC unit. Responsible for the overall management of the JROTC unit and formulates, establishes and executes procedures to be used in the instruction, administration, operations and logistics of the JROTC Program. Ensures that the JROTC Program is administered according to law, US Army Cadet Command (USACC) regulations, the Irving Independent School District policies and procedures. This position reports to the School Principal.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree; Master's Degree preferred

Work Experience:
  • Must be a retired US Army Officer in the rank of Warrant Officer, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel or Colonel
  • Must meet and maintain the medical requirements in Army Regulation (AR) 40-501, AR 145-2 and US Army Cadet Command Regulation 145-2

Certification:
Must be certified by the US Army Cadet Command, as a JROTC Instructor
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Directs the JROTC Department functions of instruction, logistics, training, and administration.
  • Coordinating and integrating JROTC with other school departments and community agencies.
  • Interprets and implements new regulations received from 5th Brigade Headquarters (JROTC) and US Army Cadet Command.
  • Maintains accountability of all equipment, IAW AR 710-2.
  • Conducts a public affairs effort in the local area middle and elementary schools, among school and community officials, civic groups, parent-teacher groups and other individuals or groups, designed to further the understanding of JROTC, the school and the Army.
  • Establishes and maintains integrated or extracurricular teams, e.g., drill team rifle team, raider team, academic team, orienteering team.
  • Participates and ensures the participation of assigned AIs in annual the JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC) (summer leadership program) as required by USACC.
  • Enforces contractual agreement between the school district and the Army. Ensures schools support college credit available to Cadets, honors credit, credit other than elective, etc., to the extent possible.
  • Monitors instructors' professional development ensuring they receive training, feedback and reinforcement to continually improve their teaching skills. Mentors, monitors and counsels all instructors concerning their educational requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Instructional Strategies:
  1. Serves as instructor for the JROTC unit.
  2. Obtains and affords his assistant(s) appropriate time, resources, and materials to accomplish educational goals.

School/Organizational Climate:
  1. Communicates and supports expectations that are consistent with ROTC and school objectives.

School/Organizational Improvement:
  1. Focuses activities on the accomplishment of the primary mission of the JROTC program of motivating young people to be better Americans.
  2. Develops, maintains, and uses appropriate information systems and records required for attainment of program goals.

Administration & Fiscal Facilities Management:
  1. Assists in identifying, reviewing, and analyzing resource, facility, and equipment needs.
  2. Assists in scheduling activities and securing resources needed to accomplish goals.
  3. Assists in implementation of policies established by federal law, JROTC regulation, state law, State Board of Education rules, and the local board of education with respect to the JROTC program.

Student Management:
  1. Implements and supports JROTC, district, and campus standards and rules of conduct.

Professional Growth and Development:
  1. Uses information provided through assessment instruments and a professional growth plan to improve performance.
  2. Participate in professional development programs, disseminates ideas and information to other professionals.
  3. Participates in professional organizations.

School/Community Relations:
  1. Encourages JROTC cadet participation in and support of school activities.
  2. Projects a positive image to the community.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Must maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problem solving skills while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making. Frequent in-district and occasional in-state or national travel. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
