Job description

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) is searching for Senior Academic Advisor.

CLAS Senior Academic Advisors are instrumental in supporting both the departments they serve and ensuring student success. They provide individual guidance to students throughout their university journey, whether in-person or through Zoom meetings, focusing on academic planning and goal setting, fostering an inclusive environment, and promoting engagement in opportunities and resources for academic and career growth.

Senior advisors offer additional support to students facing academic challenges, actively participating in college retention and graduation efforts, and helping transfer students transition to the University.

Advisors actively collaborate with their respective departments and the College to enhance the undergraduate experience. They engage students in career exploration, personal and professional development, and the cultivation of a lifelong learning mindset, all aimed at creating a meaningful and transformative college experience for each student.

In addition, CLAS advisors work cohesively, supporting one another through cross-training, programming, and staff development. They also play a vital role in committees that collectively improve the advising experience. Advisors engage in weekly and monthly developmental and community-oriented activities within the College and may take part in Commencement ceremonies.

CLAS advisors facilitate connections between students and faculty for specialized advising and mentoring, monitor student academic progress, and maintain confidential student records. They coordinate the evaluation of transfer credits for both domestic and international coursework, represent their departments and the College at campus meetings, participate in recruitment initiatives, and assist with course enrollments. Advisors also develop written materials for distribution, both in print and online. They actively contribute an advising-based perspective to departmental committees, offering insights on curriculum, policies, and procedures. Senior advisors provide assessments and recommendations to their departments, addressing student issues, course scheduling, curriculum requirements, and obstacles that may hinder timely graduation.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), established in 1900, is the largest of the 11 colleges that comprise the University of Iowa, with 37 departments spanning the visual, performing, literary, and cinematic arts; humanities; natural and mathematical sciences; social and behavioral sciences; and communication disciplines.
