Position Summary: The UAF Geophysical Institute is looking for a Seismo-Acoustic Network Security Technician to join the Wilson Alaska Technical Center (WATC) operational team. This person will team up with WATC engineers, scientists, and staff to maintain a global network of infrasound and seismic stations that provide real-time data to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) and similar networks. Duties:

40 WATC seismo-acoustic station Operation and Management (O&M): Advise WATC engineers and technicians and act as lead IS Technician during maintenance of seismo-acoustic stations. Travel to remote stations as required. Remote travel may include destinations in Antarctica, remote Pacific islands, Alaska, and the continental U.S. Travel may take up to 10% of job duties. Lead remote IT monitoring of WATC seismo-acoustic stations via State Of Health (SOH) collection. Report on compliance to cyber security requirements of funding agencies and other partners. Interact directly with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) IMS and International Data Center representatives regarding station IT operations. Collaborate directly with Sandia National Labs and UAF subcontractors on WATC IT projects and cyber security concerns. Ensure WATC compliance with the data security protocols of funding and partner agencies, including the US government and the CTBTO. Participate, and lead relevant sessions, in field technician training with UAF and other peer university personnel. Thoroughly document all work. Essential
60 IT support for the Wilson Alaska Technical Center (WATC): Serve as expert specialist with a focus on leading WATC's cyber security program. Obtain and maintain current Cisco certification. Obtain and maintain CompTIA Network+ certification. Develop cybersecurity awareness within WATC by advising and training WATC engineers, staff, faculty, and analysts on cybersecurity best practices and procedures. Work closely with UAF Research Computing Systems (RCS) and the Office of Information Technology (OIT), in maintaining global network topology, Virtual Private Networks (VPN's), and firewalls. Maintain clear and concise network documentation. As the WATC expert Network Security specialist, work with external collaborators and station operators in Information Technology (IT) level troubleshooting, maintenance, and upgrades. Determine and implement changes to address IT issues. Characterize, troubleshoot, and document International Monitoring System (IMS) Global Communications Infrastructure (GCI) performance. Advise and train WATC engineers and UAF IT professionals to establish and maintain Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) compliance. Lead WATC's efforts in migrating computing resources to RCS and WATC-led maintenance of servers. Forecast expenditures for RCS migrations work, and any cyber security-related projects assigned. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Cisco systems.
  • Knowledge of field-based IT troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Ability to develop cybersecurity awareness within the organization.
  • Demonstrated expert in subject matter with advanced knowledge of the operation and maintenance of networks and network communications systems, including WAN/LAN, high-speed networks, public telecommunications, Internet, and other network technologies.
  • Knowledge of methods of installing and maintaining network systems, PCs and workstations, and operating systems by performing troubleshooting and by applying knowledge of cabling standards and installation standards.
  • Ability to work in remote locations without direct supervision.
  • Ability to install, cable, and configure voice, data, and video network components in accordance with IS engineering specifications, and with codes, regulations, standards, and policies.
  • Ability to implement computer networking technologies and methodologies and operate a variety of personal computers and related equipment.
  • Ability to interpret data results for reporting to relevant funding agencies and partners.
  • Ability to identify, diagnose and resolve complex network problems with equipment logistics, system setup and configuration, system security, and software installation.
  • Ability to lead, train, and evaluate lower-level staff and to problem solve a variety of operational problems in data processing and computer operation systems and related technology.
  • Familiar with Linux OS and system administration knowledge.
  • Current CompTIA certificate (or equivalent) or working towards it.
Required Education or Training:
  • Associate's degree in IT, Cybersecurity, computer science, physical sciences, electrical engineering, electro-mechanical engineering, or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Six years progressively responsible experience as an IT technician, Cybersecurity/CMMC, and/or in Scientific/IT field work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must be able to obtain a Secret level clearance.
Salary Information:

This position is full-time, Grade 80, term-funded, exempt, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, based on education and experience.
