Position works variable shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Performs all duties and assignments of a Security Officer I, including but not limited to; entry control, patrols, restoring order when required, providing information to civic/public and/or government visitors/employees, detention and/or apprehension of trespasses or persons identified as a risk, search(s) for person(s) conducting criminal acts and/or other violations, provides assistance to evacuate/secure installation infrastructure in the event of an emergency.
In addition to Officer duties, Shift Sergeant, under the direction of the Deputy Chief; supervise, lead, direct, and coach a shift of Security Officers providing security services. Responsibilities include: review work assignments for direct reports - prepare performance appraisals - maintain shift schedules - manage leave requests - prepare corrective actions for approval - ensure shift personnel have assigned equipment to perform duties - ensure subordinate personnel are informed and trained on changes to directive/policy/site specific procedures - approve timecards for direct reports - assist with new hire training and orientation. Shift Sergeants will also direct security and other responders at the scene of emergencies following the Incident Command System/National Incident Management System (ICS/NIMS). Position will assume duties of the Security Officer III in his/her absence.
Responsibilities include:
Under general supervision, serve as a shift supervisor over SECURITY OFFICERs engaged in protection of civilian/government personnel and assets; direct subordinate personnel in the accomplishment of security functions; performs related work as required to provide close boundary and perimeter protection from dangers of sabotage, espionage, armed intrusion, and other accidental or willful damage or destruction.
Monitor traffic flow, check credentials of personnel entering all Access Control Points (ACP)
Provide installation security by performing roving, random vehicular patrols - check and ensure security of Mission Essential Vulnerable Areas (MEVAs).
In hostile situations, initiate request to local law enforcement to quell disturbance. Detain intruders for turnover to law enforcement agencies. May use deadly force in self-defense and/or to protect life of self and/or personnel.
Conduct and assist in traffic accident investigations and civil/criminal investigations.
Monitor and/or respond to alarms
Monitor radio traffic and utilize two-way radio and answer phone calls, assist in answering questions from public/visitors/employees.
Render assistance to lost, stranded, or injured persons and perform other job-related activities as required.
Support other Departments during inspections and all major incidents as directed by the on-scene Commander.
Knowledge of:
Thorough understanding of the English language and to communicate both orally and in writing.
Knowledge or ability to learn and apply search & seizure, arrest, use of force procedures.
Must possess a functional knowledge of personal computer operations in a network environment.
Knowledge of electronic devices (i.e. radio communications, computers, monitors, recording, and photography) and other security equipment.
Knowledge or ability to learn standardized federal laws, regulations, methods, procedures, operating techniques, state, and local laws to perform tasks including, but not limited to, pursuing and apprehending persons fleeing a crime scene; performing dispatcher duties involving passing of directions and information to officers on posting assignments; seeking, detecting, and protecting evidence and witnesses at the scene of an incident; and detaining witnesses and suspects.
Knowledge or ability to develop a thorough understanding of a wide variety of security, fire, and environmental alarm systems and the action appropriate in the event of their activation.
Knowledge in the evaluation of subordinate personnel

Provide excellent customer service through interaction with others, internally and externally through verbal and non-verbal means and is not limited to in-person interaction, written correspondence, and telephonic.
Carry a firearm and/or additional weapons (lethal and nonlethal) and demonstrate a high level of proficiency and safety.
Supervisory skills in mentoring and coaching employees.
Knowledge and skills to apply conflict resolution.
Ability to:
Apply various levels of force that's in compliance with policy, regulations, or procedure.
Must demonstrate the ability to physically perform assigned duties.
Must possess the ability to render first aid and provide advanced knowledge of response to subordinate personnel.
Supervise, motivate, mentor and develop subordinate staff members.
Oversee shift schedules and make necessary adjustments to ensure adequate coverage in the event of unexpected absences.
Oversee administrative function, including but not limited to; proper completion of reports, logs, time and earnings submission, leave requests, and other reports as assigned.
Communicate instructions to subordinate personnel while keeping supervisors informed on all matters pertaining to security at assigned locations.
Demonstrate the ability to address performance concerns and apply corrective measures as needed.
Monitor subordinate personnel quality of work, ensuring timeliness and accuracy.
In coordination with the Training Officer, provides field training for new Officers, ensure subordinate personnel are properly equipped, and provide on-going training and direction.
Ability to work variable shifts including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
Desired qualifications include any combination of experience, education and training that meets the knowledge, skills, and abilities described. Preferred candidate is a member of the AZ National Guard and has practical experience working with a law enforcement agency, military, police service, or a private security organization and has certifications in security or law enforcement.
This position requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training.
Candidates for this position will be required to submit to a criminal background investigation as well as possess the ability to achieve a favorable Tier 3 investigation for purpose of obtaining/maintaining a Secret clearance eligibility and Common Access Card (CAC).
Must be able to qualify and maintain proficiency with the use of all agency issued and authorized weapons, including lethal and less than lethal weapons, IAW agency policy and procedures.
