Applications are now being accepted for the Security Guard Supervisor, Bookstore - Illini Union position for Illini Union at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Job Summary

Develops, implements, and manages the asset protection program in the Illini Union Bookstore to safeguard the staff, buildings, and inventory.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, or coordinates security activities to safeguard Illini Union Bookstore assets, individuals, and property.
  • Identifies and investigates retail theft situations, responds to problems, and investigates incidents related to asset protection.
  • Implements procedures to control theft, loss of merchandise, and store cash to control employee theft and deter shoplifters.
  • Conducts periodic inspections to ensure that staff are performing in accordance with appropriate guidelines.
  • Provides asset protection training to department managers and store personnel.
  • Maintains necessary operational records, reports, and budgets for security.
  • Verify incoming invoices and product receipts for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensures safety of property, supplies, staff, and patrols specific facilities and reports safety hazards.
  • Ensures enforcement of University rules and regulations; investigates, documents and reports events/incidents to the appropriate office, including campus police department or other local authorities. Works closely with campus police, Dean of Students Office, or local authorities on arrests made related to asset protection.
  • Manages, operates, and maintains security equipment, alarm system, and key/key card system and recommends internal needs for asset protection, camera locations, security needs, alarms, and monitor locations.
  • Supervises and/or monitors additional help (e.g., students, student patrol members) who may assist in asset protection duties.
  • Perform other duties and additional responsibilities as assigned to help further the mission of the unit.

Additional Physical Demands

Position involves remaining stationary and/or moving for extended periods of time and is essential to the position.
Extended hours are necessary during special events, buy back, and rush with required overtime, abbreviated lunches, and breaks.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High school graduation or equivalent.

2. No record of conviction of a felony, or of a crime involving moral turpitude.

3. One year (12 months) of security experience comparable to the lower level of this series.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years of previous experience in asset protection, security, or a related role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of criminal and civil laws as they relate to asset protection activity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, patiently, and objectively in order to clearly demonstrate knowledge, command of the situation, and traits that include concern, integrity, and respect for the individual and/or situation.
  • Ability to coordinate, train and/or effectively supervise others.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive operational reports.
  • Ability to enforce security rules and regulations.
  • Ability to maintain an awareness of the environment for suspicious or criminal behavior or activity.
  • Ability to identify or detect a known pattern (a figure, object, word, or sound) that is hidden in other distracting material; flexibility of closure.
  • Ability to think critically, respond effectively, and maintain a professional demeanor in potentially high stress or emergency situations.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4211 - Security Guard Supervisor position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 3/22/2024. Salary is commensurate with experience, with the minimum salary of $40,000.00 per year. The usual work hours for this position are Monday - Friday (10am to 6:30pm).

Work for this position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
