Salem City Schools is searching for multiple secondary in-school Math Tutors for the 2023-2024 school year. This position would work multiple days per week for 7-30 hours total. TUTOR GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:Performs intermediate professional work providing tutorial support services to students in general instruction or in a specialized subject or assigned group of subjects, motivating students to develop skill in assigned subject matters; does related work as required.
Work is performed under the regular supervision of the building Principal. This is a non-exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act. This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:Providing tutorial support to students. The Tutor also...Monitors student work on specific assignments;Work with students individually and in small groups;Provides assistance and encourages students to complete all assignments to the best of their ability;Assists students by discussing class notes, preparing for tests or solving difficult homework problems;Re-teach content and remediate students who need extra instruction;Encourages students to think independently, develop and express original ideas;Maintains tutorial competence through in-service education;Performs related tasks as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:General knowledge of subject(s) taught; general knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; general knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students and parents.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with a degree in an acceptable field. Bachelor's degree preferred. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
