Summary of Job
Performs a variety of manual tasks in maintaining zoo grounds and playground. One half of the emphasis of this position will be covering hours and grounds maintenance at the zoo and the other doing maintenance and feeding of animals. Working hours will be on an assigned schedule any day of the week including weekends and holidays. This is physically demanding work maintaining grounds of the zoo, jurisdiction of the Parks and Recreation Department. The employee works under direct supervision of the Zoo Manager receives instructions on special projects as required.
Responsibilities
  • Will clean, sanitize and be responsible for zoo facilities including but not limited to restrooms, educational facility, farm petting facility and all other zoo structures.
  • Unloads incoming supplies and delivers to appropriate locations and works in conjunction with other department staff.
  • Performs building(s), grounds, and facility maintenance and assists in general repair and development of zoo and park facilities from season to season.
  • Assists with animal restraining techniques with the Curator of Animals and Curator of Education-Special Events.
  • Assists in transferring animals, birds, or fish from one location to another within the zoo facility when needed.
  • Feeds, provides water, and cleans up after the animals at the zoo when assigned.
  • Informs Zoo Curator of any discrepancy in animal behavior.
  • Picks up refuse in the parks, zoo, boulevards, and playground areas and place it in the appropriate truck or compactor.
  • Operates a variety of park vehicles including trucks, mowers, and tractors.
  • Ability to use and care for a variety of hand tools used in the maintenance in parks and zoo.
  • Works with landscaping techniques including selection, planting, watering, fertilizing, and maintaining flower beds, shrubs, and ground covers.
  • Assists in preparation and take down of special events.
  • Assists with security of buildings and grounds at the zoo facility.
  • Does related work as required.

Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary interests desire, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform in the Zoo maintenance position.
Certifications/Licenses: Must have Wisconsin Driver's License
Other Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instruction, blueprints, government regulations and procedures manuals.

MATHEMATICAL ABILITY:
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to calculate figures.
REASONING ABILITY:
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to apply situational reasoning ability by exercising good judgment in the implementation of work orders.
  • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision.

The City anticipates filling these positions pending Committee approval and funding.
