Ohio Wildlife Center Position Description

Seasonal Wildlife Program Specialist

Position Type: PT Hourly - Seasonal

Location: Ohio Wildlife Center - Powell, OH

Reports to: Education Manager

Primary Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Delivers mission-aligned on and off-site programming
  • Helps design and implement mission-aligned wildlife programming, props, displays and exhibits
  • Prepares handouts, forms and related materials for public outreach and trainings
  • Possesses general knowledge of Ohio Wildlife Center services and programs- markets to the public
  • Provides exceptional daily animal care and husbandry services- monitors for signs of injury or illness, contributes to training, enrichment, etc.
  • Works with related staff to properly maintain animal exhibits, ensure safety and facility upkeep
  • Contributes to animal use records in compliance with state and federal regulations
  • Maintains supplies and equipment inventories
  • Maintains oversight of volunteers and training
  • Regularly recognizes and thanks volunteers to encourage continued involvement
  • Upholds policies and procedures of Ohio Wildlife Center animal care and humane treatment
  • Creates and maintains a positive working environment
  • Maintains constant focus on safe workplace practices
  • Attends required team and organizational meetings, represents at public events
  • Assists other team members carry out organizational tasks when necessary
  • Provides courteous and professional customer support across departments
  • Works evenings and weekends as required, willingness for occasional travel is necessary
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

Essential Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelor degree in zoology, education, natural resources, interpretive sciences or related field or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing, including public speaking, speaking on the phone and utilizing audio-visual and other technology equipment
  • Clean background check, valid Ohio motor vehicle operator's license and good driving record
  • Working knowledge of general biology of native Ohio wildlife and understanding of wildlife rehabilitation

Required Abilities and Skills

  • At least one year experience in customer service and/or environmental interpretation
  • At least one year experience in animal handling or husbandry
  • Experience in working with volunteers
  • Reliability in physical attendance and attitude towards others
  • Competency in basic word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software
  • Understanding of and commitment to the role and mission of Ohio Wildlife Center
  • Maintain professional appearance (includes wearing appropriate, well-kept uniform)
  • Adhere to policies and operating standards of Ohio Wildlife Center
  • Positively promote Ohio Wildlife Center's programs and services
  • Maintain positive attitude and public image at all times
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to use steps; ladders; stand on feet for up to four hours at a time; balance, stoop and kneel; and sit at a desk while using a keyboard.

  • Frequently required to walk and reach with arms and hands.
  • Physically fit; able to lift 75 pounds
  • No aversion to inclement weather

Compensation:

Ohio Wildlife Center provides competitive wages and benefits package commensurate with experience. This is a part time, hourly position with an immediate start date. Interview and relocation expenses are the responsibility of the applicant/successful candidate. There is a 90-day introductory period.
