Job Description
Under the general direction of the Recreation Manager, this position is responsible for providing professional recreational programming for a variety of recreational program areas throughout the summer in the City of Appleton. Performs professional work at the administrative level, is responsible for programming and scheduling recreation programs for all ages, appropriate to the community needs.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Responsible for planning, organizing, scheduling, coordinating and implementing recreational activities and classes related to the summer playground program.
  • Responsible for the recruiting, training, supervising and evaluating of seasonal staff and volunteers to support the following program areas: Playground Program, Special Events, Trips, and other areas as assigned. Site visits will also be required by the coordinator.
  • Provides program evaluations and reports through regular personal observation, employee, parent, and participant feedback.
  • Compiles payroll information and inputs into current payroll system with parameters set by department.
  • Responsible for securing, scheduling and preparing recreation facilities for programs.
  • Evaluates risk management concerns related to all programming to ensure safe, clean and attractive facilities for participants.
  • Maintains inventory, orders and distributes recreation supplies and equipment needed for the summer playground program and events associated with the program.
  • Works with community partners to increase/maximize programming opportunities in the City of Appleton.
  • Prepares and monitors budgets related to all assigned programming areas. All end-of-program reports are to be current, accurate and consistently reliable to maximize service cost recovery.
  • Develops alternative resource methods related to programming, i.e. sponsorships, concessions, advertisement, etc.
  • Establishes and maintains a customer focused approach for recreation programming.
  • Displays innovative and creative ideas and methods for the service delivery of recreation programs.
  • Assists with the facilitation of promotion/marketing of designated recreation programs/special events to increase public awareness and participation.
  • Conducts seasonal staff training, staff meetings, and volunteer orientations.
  • Assists with staff and volunteer recognition.
  • Works with all Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Management Department management/supervisory staff in a team environment.
  • Responds to accidents and/or emergencies in a calm and controlled manner.
  • Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works overtime and extra hours as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs public relations functions.
  • Performs routine administrative duties (telephone, written correspondence, etc.)
  • Attends and participates in staff and City meetings as needed.
  • Attends meetings of outside leisure service providers and serves as a liaison between the City of Appleton and these leisure service providers.

Typical Qualifications
Any combination of training, education and experience equivalent which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Education: Two years of college or university level work (coursework in Recreation, Education or a related field preferred)
Experience: Four years of municipal recreation and/or program coordination experience including some leadership/supervisory experience.
Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Methods and problem solving in recruitment, training, placement, supervision, evaluation and retention of part-time, seasonal staff.
  • Maintaining a high level of personal leadership, organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, associates, and the public, and handling difficult situations in a tactful manner.
  • Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Preparing clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports.
  • Coordinating the establishment and maintenance of appropriate records and files.
  • Computer applications and use of general office equipment.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License; obtain First Aid and CPR Certification within 6 months of employment.

Employment Period: May - August
Work Schedule: Hours per week - 40
Evening and weekend hours may be required
Work Location: Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Management Office (1819 Witzke Blvd.)
This position is a non-benefited position with the City of Appleton.
