Job Information

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
These positions are represented by the Public Employees Local 71 Union (L71) and are subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and L71.

DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation
HOURS OF WORK: Hours vary; 4/10 shifts - Monday thru Sunday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
LOCATION: 1321 Lidia Selkregg Lane, Anchorage, AK
These are seasonal, full-time positions with an anticipated start date of May 8, 2024 and will last approximately 6 months from time of hire.

Example of Duties

Under supervision of the Horticulture Supervisor and or Parks Supervisor, performs park
maintenance and horticulture tasks of a skilled nature in parks, on trails, and at Municipal
grounds and facilities. May have responsibility for leading, training, and giving general direction to other Parks Caretakers, Gardeners and/or Operators. Maintains turf areas including mowing, irrigation, raking and fertilization. Operates mowers, tractors and other associated equipment. Maintains sports fields, rinks, and courts. Maintains trails and walkways. Assists with landscape projects involving the operation of appropriate equipment. Provides maintenance for facilities, signs, fences and barriers. Plants and maintains shrubs and trees as required. Prepares landscape areas for seeding and planting. Maintains areas by weeding, spraying, pruning and other associated duties. Participates in sanitation maintenance including litter collection, rest room cleaning, and park area clean-up. Delivers, assembles, installs and maintains parks, sports, and special equipment. Reports acts of vandalism and makes repairs to property and facilities. Documents park data, and inventories park areas and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent and two (2) years of applicable turf maintenance, flower bed, landscape, trails, or other grounds maintenance experience.
Must possess the following certifications by the time of hire:

  • Valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) Endorsement

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with Tanker endorsement and a current copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug screening prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the satisfactory review and completion of the Previous Employer Alcohol & Drug Test Information Forms. Names, addresses, and phone numbers for positions that required Department of Transportation testing for the last two years will be required in compliance with § 40.25 and § 382.405(f) and (h).
All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.
Military Service Interview Preference:
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
