Job description

Job Title: Seasonal Grounds Crew

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hours: Seasonal (flexible schedule of 24 hours or more per week including weekends and holidays) from early March to late November


Summary:

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium is seeking Grounds Crew to maintain a high level of cleanliness in the Zoo while maintaining outstanding guest service to the public. Grounds Crew members are primarily responsible for assuring guest pathways and surrounding landscape areas are clean and free of trash and debris. All Zoo employees are expected to provide excellent guest service skills to the public by answering routine questions, greeting visitors, and following Zoo policies. This position works outside in all weather conditions and reports directly to the Guest Services Supervisor team.


Duties and Responsibilities
(include but not limited to):

  • Adhere and comply with the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium Employee Handbook.
  • Promote teamwork within the working environment; assist coworkers when necessary.
  • Ensure guest pathways and surrounding landscape areas are clean and free of trash or debris.
  • Must be able to use basic cleaning equipment including but not limited to brooms, pans, mops, scrapers, rakes, and leaf blowers.
  • Seasonal blowing, bagging, and proper disposal of leaves.
  • Assist in keeping parking lots and perimeter areas clean.
  • Receive cross-training on rides, Alaskan Adventure Splash Pad, ticket redemption, theater ushering, and other areas to assist during breaks or when staffing is needed.
  • Provide general information to our Zoo guests about exhibits or facilities and their locations.
  • Promote a positive team environment and assist co-workers when necessary.
  • Maintain proper radio etiquette using a multi-channel system.
  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Enforce Zoo policies of closures and evacuations in the event of emergency situations.
  • Report all safety related, animal related, mechanical issues, or other incidents to a supervisor or manager.
  • Represent the Zoo in a positive and professional manner to maintain an open and accepting atmosphere.
  • Perform special projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Must be available to work at least 24 hours each week during the summer season.
  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays during the summer season.
  • Evening shift opportunities may be available.
  • Will be required to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Must have an outgoing and engaging personality.


Experience:

  • Prior experience using outdoor yard equipment such as leaf blower and power washer preferred but not required.
  • Prior guest services experience preferred but not required.
  • Bilingual language skills a plus.


Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Will sometimes work extended/odd hours including weekends and holidays.
  • May have the opportunity to work some evening events.
  • Must be able to walk long distances across the zoo.
  • Work is done in an outdoor setting.
  • Shift will start in the early morning or run into the late evening.
  • Must wear closed toe shoes.
  • Must be able to stand; walk; use of hands to handle, signal and feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; and/or crawl.
  • Continuous, daily physical activity using basic tools throughout the entire zoo.
  • Operating basic machinery such as leaf blowers or gum blasters.
  • Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods.
  • Will work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, rain, and snow.
