THE CITY OF OCEANSIDE IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
The City of Oceanside is currently accepting applications for Seasonal Aquatics Adventure Instructor for summer Surf Camp and Kayaking programs. There are currently four available positions.
**This position will close as soon as a sufficient number of applications have been received**
The Seasonal Aquatics Adventure Instructor will be leading, organizing and teaching summer aquatic day camp activities. The duties also include teaching surfing, body boarding, oceanography, kayaking, snorkeling, beach/water safety, wave etiquette, and equipment selection, care and repair. The candidate selected will lead various beach-related games and activities; instruction will occur on land and in water; teaching methods may include lecture, demonstration, and skill practice. This position observes swimmers to protect life and prevent accidents, rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and applies cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid. Secures and cleans equipment and assists with equipment repairs. Prepares records, reports and camper certificates; performs other related work as assigned.
Applicants under age 18 will be required to submit an authorized work permit upon offer of employment.
Education and Experience:
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years personal experience and high proficiency level in surfing, body boarding, kayaking/snorkeling; and experience working with the public and/or recreation programs. Must be able to work cooperatively with others; be comfortable teaching and encouraging students; able to set up and breakdown camp environment and be able to work outdoors for up to to 8 hours a day. Applicants must possess experience working with the public and/or recreation programs, including childcare, child supervision, and/or child education. Desirable qualifications include supervisory skills or leadership experience; experience teaching surfing, kayaking and oceanography knowledge.
Training: American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and/or United States Lifesaving Association Open Water Lifeguard Training certifications are highly desirable.
Certifications/Licenses Required:
Certifications must be current and must remain current throughout employment.
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer (or equivalent)
  • First Aid; or Title 22 First Aid; or Emergency Medical Response

Special Requirements: Must be available to work variable working hours, including weekends, evenings and/or holidays.
Environmental Conditions:Outdoor Beach, Marina and/or Harbor environment; indoor and outdoor classroom and activity center environment; work around or in water; exposure to all types of weather conditions; extensive public contact.
Physical Conditions:Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for heavy or light lifting, swimming, running, kneeling, bending, crouching, walking, standing, or sitting for prolonged periods of time, exercising full range of motion of the arms, hands, wrists and fingers, speaking and hearing to exchange information, visual acuity to assess a variety of situations and respond to those situations; read and interpret information.
Testing Information:A COMPLETEDAPPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED BY THE STATED DEADLINE IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EXAMINATION PROCESS. A PHOTO ID MUST BE PRESENTED TO BE ADMITTED INTO THE EXAM.
Selection Process:The examination process is divided into three separate phases, a performance/practical exam, CPR exam and an oral interview. Individuals must successfully complete each portion in order to advance to the next phase.
Performance Exam: Candidates must complete a 100 yard swim within 2 minutes; tread water for 5 minutes without the use of hands. Testing process will also include a practical exam of CPR and First Aid knowledge; and a demonstration of proficiency in surfing, paddling and/or kayaking.
Portions of the exam will take place at the beach/ocean.APPLICANTS MUST PROVIDE THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION TO THE BEACH/OCEAN TEST SITE.
Oral Board Interview: Oral interviews will be held the SAME MORNING of the test day. Interviews are designed to ensure candidates posses the required qualifications necessary for the position.
