JOB SUMMARY
To operate one or more multiple spindle Screw Machines equipped with automatic indexing and feeding mechanisms to perform turning, boring, threading, and facing operations on metal bar stock to produce complex machined parts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Trainee
- Operates and tends one previously set-up mutiple spindle Screw Machine, as directed, equipped with automatic indexing and feeding mechanisms to perform turning, boring, threading, and facing operations on metal bar stock according to specifications.
- Loads bar stock into feeding mechanisms; starts machine, engages feeds, and observes machine operation; notifies supervisor or trainer of any operating problems.
- Removes machined work pieces from the machine and inspects work pieces to verify conformance to specifications per the blueprint and I & I sheet using instruments such as comparator, plug and ring gauges, calipers, and micrometers.
- Maintains quality and production standards as described on the I & I sheet.
- Uses the 3 container system, production and scrap tags, and other administrative systems and provides the appropriate records and report documentation.
- Performs routine machine maintenance including lube oil, coolant level, and chip removal.
Level I
- Operates one or two Screw Machines and maintains daily production standards.
- Reads blueprints, layouts, and I & I sheet for such information as dimensioning, tolerances, and number of work pieces to be machined; examines machine tooling set-up; loads bar stock into feeding mechanisms; starts machine and observes operation; and adjusts and changes tool settings to keep dimensions within specified tolerances as directed.
- Removes and replaces a limited number of worn or broken tools under supervision and sharpens tools using a bench grinder, surface grinder, or cutter-grinding machine.
- Learns to change and adjust collets, feeders, cams, and gears under supervision.
- Performs departmental cross checks as required.
- Learns to analyze and establish necessary tooling maintenance schedules.
- Maintains quality standards as described on the I & I sheet and maintains established production standards; notifies supervisor of discrepancies.
- Learns to in diagnose routine production problems and makes necessary corrections under supervision.
Level II
- Operates two Screw Machines with minimal supervision, and maintains daily production standards.
- Operates all Acme, Davenport, or Gildemeister multiple spindle Screw Machines in the respective department in the machining of any part the company manufactures using Screw Machines.
- Analyzes and corrects most tooling variations and problems without supervision, such as chattering tools, variation and finish problems, thread problems, and makes drills and reamers cut to size.
- Familiar with all applicable attachments and holders.
- Performs complete set-up change-overs without supervision.
- Rebuilds machine smash-ups under supervision.
- Diagnoses daily production problems and makes necessary corrections with minimal supervision.
- Assists in departmental training as required.
- Learns to perform and complete uncomplicated set-ups including rough tool setting and set-up fixturing commensurate with knowledge and experience.
General
- Cleans machines and tools and machine areas as required.
- Utilizes statistical process control techniques in operating the machines in accordance with experience and training.
- Participates in Total Quality Management (TQM) and TS-16949 Teams to improve product quality, as requested.
- Observes all safety and housekeeping rules and procedures and supports and encourages safety and good housekeeping throughout the company; takes immediate action on safety related issues.
- Supports management policies and procedures; cooperates with and supports other company employees; and works reliably and flexibly to meet departmental company and customer needs and objectives including quality, service, and productivity.
V. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

- High school graduate or GED or the equivalent level knowledge and capability in reading, writing, physics, technology fundamentals, communications, and applied mathematics (shop math). A trade school education with co-op experience and knowledge in machine shop technology, shop math, blueprint reading, and measurement instruments is preferred.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and physical dexterity including proficiency in determining spatial relationships pertaining to machines, tools, and machined parts.
- Six months to three years experience for Level I/II operator.
- Requires a working knowledge in Screw Machine operation (multi-spindle), blueprint reading, measurement equipment utilization, cutting tool geometry, machine maintenance, quality control and statistical process control.
- Requires training skills and competencies commensurate with the requirement to train other personnel on an as needed basis.
