Scientist/Sr. Scientist (Advisor/Sr. Advisor), mRNA

Highly motivated and creative scientist that will help build the company’s mRNA technology exploration and production platform. The successful candidate will support R&D efforts within the company, initially as an individual contributor and in the future as a small team lead, focused on research-grade mRNA production and exploration of therapeutic mRNA optimization strategies. A deep technical background in mRNA technology and design, experience working with several mRNA modalities are required. Strong organizational and communication skills, creative problem-solving, and flexibility are essential.

Job responsibilities:
  • Lead projects to develop, design, construct, and evaluate mRNA therapeutics.
  • Design and perform routine molecular biology experiments, including mRNA design, molecular cloning, in vitro transcription, etc.
  • Establish cell-based assays to evaluate mRNA activity and expression of therapeutic proteins and antigens.
  • Contribute to projects directly at the bench and later by leading one or more Research Associates.
  • Clearly communicate results and recommendations to collaborators, colleagues, managers, and senior management, leading project decision-making.
  • Contribute to the company’s intellectual property portfolio by generating new ideas, recommending technical strategy, reading broadly in relevant fields, and diligently maintaining organized records.

Job requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, or related discipline with 2+ years of relevant academic or pharmaceutical industry experience (can include post-doc experience), or a Master's degree with 10+ years of experience.

Additional Skills/Preferences:
  • Deep understanding of applications and technical challenges with more than 1 mRNA therapeutic modality (mRNA, saRNA, circRNA, etc.).
  • Experience with therapeutic mRNA clone design and proficiency with molecular design software tools (SnapGene, Geneious, or equivalent).
  • Experience with mRNA IVT and purification.
  • Experience with characterization of DNA/RNA molecules using state-of-the-art techniques.
  • Experience with cell-based mRNA activity assay development.
  • Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to drive projects in a highly collaborative work environment.
  • Relevant publication record in academic and/or patent literature.
  • Familiarity with emerging mRNA technologies and understanding of industry trends.
  • Familiarity with high-throughput assays and/or processes development
  • Exposure to preclinical development of mRNA therapeutics.
  • Enthusiasm about lab automation and incorporation of automated liquid handlers in lab workflows.
  • Familiarity with Scrum or other Agile framework
