Scientist, R&D-Coffee Product Development
Location: Orrville Corporate Offices
Your Opportunity
In this role you will independently lead innovation and execution of Product Development for the Café Bustelo product portfolio. You will practice a unique emphasis on business acumen in lockstep with your Marketing Brand Managers, serving as the technical voice capturing the authenticity of the Café Bustelo brand. Responsibilities for this role will span strengthening expertise & technical problem-solving in both roast & ground and liquid coffee formats in collaboration with the Liquid Coffee Venture. You will manage & coach a Sr. Lab Technician to support Product Development initiatives for both Café Bustelo & the Liquid Coffee Venture R&D Teams.
Your primary responsibilities will include:

• Lead formulation development of new & existing formulas for Café Bustelo roast & ground and liquid coffee formats from benchtop to commercialization.
• Utilize conceptual and practical expertise in coffee formulation and basic knowledge of related disciplines for Product Development.
• Practice strong business acumen through creativity in pipeline builds, providing leadership on technical recommendations and collaborating with the Café Bustelo Brand Marketing Team to drive the essence of the brand through technical applications.
• Uphold people management responsibilities in accordance with our Basic Beliefs to guide and coach your direct report through defining and prioritizing work, career growth opportunities, and setting expectations to deliver against the business and Coffee R&D objectives.
• Independently develop work plans, publish technical documentation within established procedures, utilize lab notebook & inventory systems and act as an advisor to our operations & contract manufacturing teams.
• Actively collaborate and leverage relationships within R&D and cross functional teams to achieve project goals, foster a continuous improvement mindset, participate in ID&E initiatives, and lead a QA or HSE Key Element

What we are looking for:
Required:

• Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (required)
• Depending on degree type/level, minimum five (5) years relevant experience across R&D, QA, TSO, or Engineering roles
• Proven success leading projects from benchtop to scale up and commercialization
• Experience partnering internally and externally with strong collaboration
• Experience effectively communicating, verbally and in writing, complex ideas to a variety of stakeholders within and outside the Company
• Examples of delivering in a changing and fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects simultaneously
• Must be willing to taste black coffee, sweet & creamy beverages, and other beverages with potential dairy, tree nut, peanut, soy, egg, and gluten allergens
• Strategic and critical thinking skills
• Continually integrate new learnings with existing knowledge and practices
• Work independently, guided by functional processes, with guidance only in complex situations (e.g., when decisions have functional or organizational impact)
• Embrace changing business priorities and ambiguity
• Ability to work a hybrid working schedule based on Company Core Weeks and business needs
• Willingness to travel approximately 20% travel

Desired:

• People management experience or experience leading a program within Research & Development
• Experience working with external business partners
• Strong experience with coffee formulations or process engineering and record of leveraging this experience to develop, qualify, and launch innovation
• Coffee cupping experience a plus
• Identified and implemented best practice approaches in technical functions.
• Maintain detailed and accurate documentation
• Collaboration with R&D multi-functional partners to deliver business results.
• Understanding of business fundamentals
