Job description

Work Where it Matters

Akima Systems Engineering (ASE), an Akima company, is not just another federal systems support contractor. As an Alaska Native Corporation (ANC), our mission and purpose extend beyond our exciting federal projects as we support our shareholder communities in Alaska.

At ASE, the work you do every day makes a difference in the lives of our 15,000 Inupiat shareholders, a group of Alaska natives from one of the most remote and harshest environments in the United States.

For our shareholders, ASE provides support and employment opportunities and contributes to the survival of a culture that has thrived above the Arctic Circle for more than 10,000 years.

For our government customers, ASE delivers solutions in maritime IT, systems engineering, and integration across the Department of Defense and stands ready to help improve operational performance at a reasonable and sustainable cost.

As an ASE employee, you will be surrounded by a challenging, yet supportive work environment that is committed to innovation and diversity, two of our most important values. You will also have access to our comprehensive benefits and competitive pay in addition to growth opportunities and excellent retirement options.

Job Summary:

The mission of the USGS Geology, Energy & Minerals Science Center (GEMSC) is to assess the nation's and the world's undiscovered energy resources and to investigate the environmental effects of resource extraction.  To achieve this mission, the Center's research program includes long-term and geographically extensive efforts to address large problems through a series of conceptually linked studies.  This includes work in a variety of energy basins, and fundamental research related to energy resources and energy-related environmental issues.

Akima Systems Engineering is looking for a Science Technician II to provide data entry and data curation services for the Carbon and Energy Storage, Emissions, and Economics (CESEE) project.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Enter data from a U.S. Bureau of Mines paper dataset into a digital spreadsheet.

  • Catalog and archive data and maps from previous CO2 assessment activities.

  • Generate metadata where possible for these datasets and GIS coverages.

  • Objectives:

  • Task 1.   Data Entry.

    • Work with USGS scientists to input data from a paper dataset of mine shaft information from the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These data are not available digitally and are not formatted in such a way that they could be read by digitizing software.

  • Task 2. CO2 data curation.

    • Work through the presentations to identify the data and maps, work with the authors of those presentations, or with other members of the project, to identify the source of the data and the maps. There is a significant amount of data has been gathered and several maps have been generated. These data and maps are in slide presentations that scientists created during the CO2 storage assessment meetings, but they are relatively inaccessible, and it is not easy to find the data.

    • Work to obtain or recreate the spreadsheets of the data and will work with the GIS projects to recreate the maps. These data will be cataloged and archived in a format that makes the data searchable and accessible by Energy Resource Program scientists for future use.

  • Task 3.   Generate metadata where possible.

    • Work with past and present project members to generate metadata, where possible, for the U.S. Bureau of Mines data and all data and map products from the data curation activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Examines data, materials, or lab results.

  • Analyze data and produce report of results in standard forms, written reports, graphs, and charts.

  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.

  • Bachelor's degree and 2-3 years of experience.

We are an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will receive consideration for employment, without regard to race, color, religion, creed, national origin, gender or gender-identity, age, marital status, sexual orientation, veteran status, disability, pregnancy or parental status, or any other basis prohibited by law.  If you are an individual with a disability, and would like to request a reasonable accommodation for any part of the employment process, please contact us at job-assist@akima.com or 571-353-7053 (information about job applications status is not available at this contact information).
