HARRISONBURG CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLSJOB DESCRIPTIONPosition:Science Teacher, High SchoolReports to:Principal, High SchoolContract:200 DaysSalary Scale:TeacherFLSA Status:Exempt Revised:5/2022, 11/2023 PRIMARY FUNCTION: Develops and implements an instructional program that will effectively provide the best possible education for each student. QUALIFICATIONSPossesses or qualifies for a Virginia Collegiate Professional license with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.Possesses outstanding knowledge and skill in the assigned instructional area and demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching and the learning process.Demonstrates knowledge of instructional strategies and skills related to scientifically-based research and its implementation.Proficiency in public speaking and written communication to express and/or exchange ideas.Emotionally mature, objective and sensitive to people and their concerns. Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, staff, co-workers and community agencies.Effectively demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions.Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks.

Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas. Excellent interpersonal skills.Proficiency in the use of a variety of office/instructional equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and email.Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSEstablishes and implements daily written lesson plans.Evaluates student learning and revises instruction accordingly.Structures teaching to encourage independent thinking by students.Effectively prepares/uses instructional materials and technology resources.Maintains appropriate expectations for all students.Differentiates instruction.Maintains appropriate student classroom behavior.Demonstrates knowledge of the subject/grade.Demonstrates resourcefulness and flexibility.Displays enthusiasm for teaching.Utilizes strategies to meet class objectives, student needs and abilities.Effectively motivates students.Manages Instructional time wisely.Models acceptable written and oral expressionsEffectively communicates with students, parents and the community.Provides appropriate feedback to studentsUses measures of student learning to improve instruction.Models professional, moral and ethical standards and personal integrity.Participates in a meaningful and continuous process of professional development.Works in a collegial and collaborative manner with peers, staff, parents and community resources to support the success of a diverse student population.Provides services to the professional, the school division and/or the community.Demonstrates good attendance and punctualitySubmits required reports on time and meets other deadlinesMaintains accurate recordsFollows proper channels of communicationAppropriately maintains confidentialityIs familiar with and abides by School Board policies, regulations and school proceduresTakes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.Responds to telephone, email and in-person requests, inquiries and questions in a professional, polite and responsive manner.Attends all required meetings.Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions, including non-discriminatory and cultural inclusion practices by respecting the worth, dignity and individual beliefs of others.Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Director of Instruction.PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and community members. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

Regular contact with staff members is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. EVALUATION: Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of licensed personnel.
