Job Description
Certified Deputy Sheriff that performs a wide variety of law enforcement activities specifically related to the school environment. Tasks are primarily service oriented and include working with and mentoring students, disseminating information, arbitrating disputes, and providing assistance through referrals, property protection, crime prevention, investigative, and other public safety services. Work involves responsibility for rapid and efficient performance of specialized duties under normal and emergency conditions, and may involve threats to personal safety and/or life. Duties include an element of personal danger, exposure to adverse weather conditions, apprehending criminals, and directing traffic. Incumbents perform duties in accordance with Florida State Statutes and established departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines. The incumbent must be able to act without close supervision and must be able to exercise independent judgment and discretion. Work is under general supervision of a sergeant, reviewed through observation, conferences and review of written reports for results obtained and adherence to established policies and procedures.
Applicants are eligible for a one-time hiring/recruitment bonus of $5,000.
An applicant with prior certified full-time law enforcement experience will be compensated above the minimum starting pay based on the applicant's years of service. Additionally, a Deputy School Resource Officer receives assignment pays totaling $2,880.80 annually.
Position Duties
Below are examples and are intended only as illustration of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this class. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or logical assignment to the position.
  • Provide law enforcement and prevention services to the school, school grounds and areas adjacent to the school.
  • Investigate allegations of criminal incidents per agency policies and procedures.
  • Divert students when appropriate and make referrals to juvenile authorities or other governmental agencies as necessary.
  • Build positive relationships with students by interacting with them in a constructive manner.
  • Establish and maintain a close partnership with school administrators in order to provide for a safe school environment.
  • Assist school officials with their efforts to enforce Board Of Education policies and procedures.
  • Ensure school administrator safety by being present during school searches, which may involve weapons, controlled or dangerous substances or in such cases that the student's emotional state may present a risk to the administrator.
  • Assist school administrators in emergency crisis planning and building security matters.
  • Train school personnel on handling crisis situations.
  • Collaborate with school officials to complete annual risk and security assessments for each respective school of assignment.
  • Collaborate with school officials and District Security to assist with the facilitation of scheduled drills at each respective school of assignment.
  • Collaborate with school officials to review and complete updated Emergency Response Plans for each respective school of assignment.
  • Be visible within the school community. Attend and participate in school functions.
  • Build working relationships with the school's staff.
  • Develop and train students on topics involving the criminal justice system.
  • Educate students and families/guardians on the role of law enforcement in society through presentations and activities.
  • Work with guidance counselors and other student support staff to provide services to students. Assist in conflict resolution efforts.
  • Initiates, develops, and maintains open lines of communication with other agencies and officials in order to optimize performance and organizational effectiveness.
  • Assist with investigating truancy issues within Brevard County Schools.
  • Uses appropriate counseling techniques in accordance with agency policies to counsel juveniles and their families/guardians, providing them with factual and legal information regarding consequences of unlawful behavior and the legal rights of juveniles.
  • During designated special operations, physically contacts assigned juveniles, providing appropriate documentation. Ensures that juveniles on probation adhere to all terms set forth by the juvenile court system and the Department of Juvenile Justice.
  • Serve on safety committees and facilitate safety awareness related programs to the respective school campus, students, employees, volunteers and visitors.
  • Attends county-wide School Resource Officer meetings and trainings.
  • Educate students interested in a career in law enforcement.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be Florida LEO Certified.
  • Must have successfully completed the Florida Law Enforcement Officer Certification or from a Florida law enforcement academy.
  • Must achieve a passing score on the Florida law enforcement certification exam, possess a good work history, must have a clean background, and a good driving history.
  • Must have two (2) years continuous law enforcement experience at the same agency with at least one (1) year in uniform patrol -OR- one (1) year continuous law enforcement SRO experience. Exclusions: Prison, Corrections, and Court Services Experience. Military and Federal Law Enforcement will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
  • Before a candidate will be assigned as an SRO, they must have completed the deputy sheriff Field Training Program.
  • Must pass the Physical Abilities Test (PAT) with a 6:04 or less. A passing PAT will be required annually to maintain the assignment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, communication skills, and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of social media.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act and other legislation.
  • Must successfully complete SRO school within 6 months of assignment.
  • Must successfully complete FDLE #1420 Crisis Response and Management.
  • Assignment will require additional annual mandatory training to include Defensive Tactics, Firearms Proficiency, Weapon Retention / Handling Skills, Active Shooter, Tactical Combat Casualty Care, First Aid, Trauma Kit & CPR/AED Certification.
  • Must successfully complete FDLE #1402 Single Officer Response to Active threat and Shooter incidents within one year of assignment and/or when offered.
  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
  • Requires a valid Florida Class E Drivers License (Must maintain for the duration of employment.)
  • Requires a FDLE Medical Clearance and successful completion of Psychological and Polygraph Examinations.

Additional Information
WORK LOCATION: Must be able to work in any geographically defined region within Brevard County.
WORK HOURS: Must be able to work shift work; any days/hours including weekends and holidays as required. Depending on the school, the assignment may require mandatory overtime.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The job requires performance of extremely physically demanding work typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, scaling and climbing. May involve lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling. Must be able to exert up to 150 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to constantly lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects such as in the event of chasing and subduing a law violator resisting physical control. Tasks may also involve standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: The job requires inside and outside work; ability to tolerate inclement weather including heat, humidity, cold, fog and sleet. Possible exposure to hazardous materials and conditions, toxic conditions, fumes, odors, vibration, dust, confined areas, animal/human waste and/or bodily fluids.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: In accordance with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement minimum vision must be at least 20/70 either/or both, corrected to 20/30 and hearing must be normal at a distance of fifteen feet.
