Job Description
UAB is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Chair, Department of Genetics.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) welcomes applications and nominations for the role of Chair of the Department of Genetics. This is a pivotal time for genetics and genomics at UAB, and nationally. Transformative advances have revolutionized and expanded the field of Genetics-deepening an ever-growing synergy between biomedical research, genomics, informatics, clinical care, and data science. A top-25, NIH-funded academic health science center, UAB integrates all these components. UAB now turns to recruiting the department Chair, who will serve as the primary driver of basic genetics research. UAB and the department are positioned to become a platform for genomics innovation both locally and regionally, affirming their place among the leading institutions and departments nationally.
The successful candidate will be a skilled leader, recognized in the field of Genetics as an outstanding scientist. Success in this role will depend on her/his ability to realize a whole greater than the parts-s/he will convene and collaborate with the institutes and units focused on informatics, precision medicine, and genomics. Candidates for this position will have an M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or a Ph.D., with significant leadership and managerial experience.
UAB is strongly committed to the success of this Chair, who will guide the department through a significant transition-implementing change and charting a new direction for growth. The Chair will leverage the existing strengths of an already solid department to expand scholarship and research funding, promote a culture of excellence and academic success, develop a diverse, cohesive and highly collaborative faculty, and foster strategic partnerships across genetics and genomics at UAB, as aligned with the institutional priorities for precision medicine, genomic medicine and informatics. The Chair reports to the senior vice president and dean for the School of Medicine.
