JOB DESCRIPTION
Providence Public Schools District (PPSD) seeks an exceptionalSCHOOL COUNSELORwho is highly qualified and skillful to join our community of teachers, students and stakeholders. This is an exciting opportunity for teachers who seek a challenging yet rewarding teaching experience.
Note: Counselors receive up to 5 extra days
Under direction of the school principal and the general direction of the Director of School Counseling, School Counselors will adhere to the PPSD Comprehensive School Counseling Program based on the American School Counselor Association National Standards and Competencies and the Rhode Island Framework for School Counseling to foster positive outcomes for all students through education, prevention, early identification and intervention. School counselors will implement a comprehensive data-driven program and practice ASCA's developmental domains of academic achievement, college and career readiness, and social emotional development to serve the needs of all students.
Additionally, School Counselors will:
  • Become members of a professional learning community where purposeful collaboration, flexibility, innovation and shared decision making are essential
  • Support and nurture the academic, college and career readiness, and social-emotional development of all students
  • Participate in all district and school-based professional development, including working with internal (coaches) and external (consultants) supports
  • Engage in all district-driven curricular and other initiatives as defined by the Providence School Department
  • Follow all relevant District procedures and policies.

We serve approximately 22,000 students at 37 elementary, middle, and high schools. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Combined, our students and families speak 55 different languages and hail from 91 countries of origin. In PPSD, the teachers and leaders set high expectations for academic achievement, provide equal access to differentiated instruction, and endeavor to close the achievement and opportunity gap among historically marginalized subgroups within the schools. EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Master's degree in School Counseling from an accredited college or university (Preferred)
RIDE Certification Requirements:
  • All Grades School Counselor, Grades PK-12
ESL Certification Preferred
Additional Experience:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of content area standards and research-based counseling practices
  • Understanding of Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS) and the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) competencies
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, administrators, and parent/community members
  • Demonstrated communication and group facilitation skills
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory
  • Highly proficient in technology and ability to utilize online platforms
  • You must complete the new hire compliance training prior to your first day of employment

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES
Academic Development:
  • Provide students with an orientation to school procedures and learning experiences
  • Advise and motivate students in academic planning for high achieving personal best in the overall process of scheduling course selections
  • Advise and schedule students into classes at the secondary level (as needed at the elementary level)
  • Analyze and interpret data including standardized test results for placement, advising and student support
  • Interpret, monitor and ensure accuracy of grades, transcripts, and student records (secondary)
  • Inspire explore and encourage advanced placement and dual and concurrent enrollment opportunities (secondary)
Career Development:
  • Coordinate and organize college and/or career fairs
  • Promote school and community CTE enrichment opportunities
  • Prepare, inspire and guide students through post-secondary planning and achievement
  • Participate and coordinate informational sessions such as school choice, college/career, and financial aid (secondary) for students and families
  • Support financial aid awareness, planning, and completion (secondary)
  • Advise and assist students with scholarship opportunities (secondary)
Social Emotional Development:
  • Support the social emotional development by removing barriers to academic success and help students manage emotions, and learn and apply interpersonal skills
  • Inclusively contribute to students' self-esteem building, promoting globally productive, high-achieving, life-long learning individuals
  • Instruct, carry out, and motivate students toward the common practice of conflict resolution and coping strategies
Program Planning and Development:
  • Implements the District's Comprehensive School Counseling Program to ensure students' academic achievement, college and career readiness, and social-emotional development
  • Promote and teach academic planning, social emotional learning competencies and skills, and, college/career awareness, exploration, and procedures
  • Utilize appropriate counseling strategies (i.e. individual, group, classroom and school-wide) in order to provide proactive preventative services
  • Provide school based support for teachers and staff to assist with initiatives and practices on improving academic success, attendance, and social emotional wellness
  • Advocate and accommodate individual educational needs within the ASCA domains
  • Practice, cultivate, and model race, culture, and gender sensitivity and inclusivity in the school community
  • Support the coordination, implementation, and completion of students' Individual Learning Plan (Secondary)
System Support:
  • Collaborate with teachers to implement classroom lessons focused on academic, college and career, and social emotional development
  • Practice and collaborate with school based teams on Multi Tiered System of Supports
  • Collaborate, refer, and consult with school and community agencies
  • Collaborate and consult with families, teachers, administrators, and community agencies to fully support students in their educational journey
  • Support students and families with the transition process to elementary, middle, high school, and post-secondary
  • Actively participate and serve on various student support and academic team meetings as requested by the principal (e.g. Crisis, Attendance, and Student Support Team)
  • Connect, outreach, and support families and community agencies relationships
  • Partner with community agencies and post-secondary institutions for the enhancement of student experiences in academics, college and career, and social-emotional development
  • Serve as a resource to families (e.g., information sharing) and an advocate for students
  • Be a member of the scheduling team and assist principal with the master schedule process, as needed
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Perform other duties as designated by the building administrator
