General Role and Responsibilities:

Assists in the safe transport of eligible students on School City of Hammond Transportation buses

General Skills and Qualifications:

Ability to learn usage of varying Safety Equipment to safely secure students based upon needs in order to transport.

Specific Responsibilities in This Position:

  • Assist in the loading and unloading of students in a safe and efficient manner
  • Assist the Bus Driver in securing seatbelts, harnesses or car seats when loading at group sites or schools
  • Maintaining discipline on the bus and reporting discipline problems to the driver
  • Become familiar with children with special needs, their differences and their needs
  • Be called upon to assist all students on and off the bus at each stop. In the case of a child living on the left side of the bus stop, the Monitor must escort the child across the street carrying a stop sign
  • Not allow any unauthorized person(s) on the School Bus
  • Not permit any child to disembark from bus unless a 16 year or older responsible party is there to assist that child into the home or the department has written notification of any exceptions.
  • Never leave students unattended
  • Check the bus to ensure no students are remaining on board and to retrieve items that have been discarded by students. (IF EITHER DRIVER OR MONITOR DOES NOT DO THEIR JOB AS DESCRIBED OR A STUDENT IS LEFT ON BOARD, THIS WILL BE AUTOMATIC TERMINATION.)
  • Occupy the seat that provides the best opportunity for supervision and student protection while the bus is in transit, normally toward the immediate rear of the passengers
  • Upon request, provide substitute bus drivers or bus drivers newly assigned to a route with information related to the route, including directions for additions to a route such as spurs, community based, etc.
  • Assist the Bus Driver and/or children in any capacity deemed necessary at the time of any emergency




  • Provide a list of student names and seating location in the case of an accident or other emergency for school, police and Transportation Department personnel.
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality in regard to student, parent, school and transportation relationships and information you are provided

· Perform all other duties as assigned

Specific Skills and Knowledge for this position:



Qualifications and Education Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED.


Personal Attributes Desired:

Ability to Communicate Orally and Written. Open to work with a wide variety of individuals.

Physical Requirements:

The employee is regularly required to hear and speak. The employee occasionally is required to lift, drag or carry. The employee is required to Pass a Physical examination before employment. Continued expectation to be able to meet Annual performance expectations as outlined by the State Department of Transportation.
