The School Bus Mechanic position is a Civil Service Non-Competitive position. The work involves the responsibility for performing skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of cars, buses, trucks, off road equipment and a wide variety of related equipment in the School District. The employee receives written/oral instructions as to the necessary repair work that may be reviewed while in progress or after completion. The School Bus Mechanic will also complete tasks as requested by the Transportation Supervisor in an effort to assist as the District carries out the Board of Education goals, mission and vision as well as New York State initiatives.
Scope of Responsibilities:
- Maintains thorough knowledge of the methods, techniques, terminology, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade as well as good knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Completes routine, scheduled maintenance on a fleet of vehicles that will include evaluate condition of vehicles and recommend repair work as needed.
- Lubricates chassis, engine, replaces filters, and other scheduled maintenance as required. Repairs and overhauls cars, buses, trucks, off road and other related equipment.
- Diagnoses and repairs automotive, electrical, fuel and mechanical problems using industry accepted diagnostic and repair equipment.
- Removes, repairs and replaces engines, transmissions, carburetors, alternators, starters, valves and other mechanical equipment.
- Performs dismounting, repair, mounting or other maintenance on wheels of varying size. Performs body, fabricating and paint work as required.
- Maintains skilled use of tools, machines and testing equipment.
- Drives vehicles as required
- May be required to assist in snow removal.
- Maintains working knowledge of the principles and repair procedures of wheel alignment, suspension systems, braking systems, electrical systems including amps, ohms, voltage and circuits as well as the principles of gasoline, diesel fueled and other engine types.
- Carries out written and oral instructions and instructs helpers in simple repair or maintenance work.
- Completes work from diagrams, sketches and defective parts.
- Maintains simple written records.
- Completes other duties as assigned by supervisor
Minimum/Preferred Qualifications:
- As specified by Erie County Department of Personnel/Civil Service
Special Requirements:
- Must possess strength and agility and maintain physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
- Required to possess basic computer skills.
- Must have experience in use of computer diagnostic software.
- Must have experience in computerized inventory tracking and work orders.
- Possession of a valid NYS class B CDL with passenger and air brake endorsement.
