The Portage County Solid Waste department is hiring a full-time Scale Operatorto join the team!
2024 starting rate of pay: $17.48 / hr
Summary of Position:
Under the direction of the Solid Waste Director, this position assists in the day-to-day operation of the County Transfer Facility and Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Primary duties include scale operation, basic record keeping, computer operation, customer service. Additional work duties include providing information on operational procedures to facility users, waste disposal and recycling services to county residents, and cleaning.
What are the primary job duties?

  • Receives in vehicles and customers entering the facility, assesses appropriate fees, and directs customers to proper disposal areas based on waste types.
  • Ensures vehicles and customers are compliant with disposal site policies and procedures, screens incoming waste loads for banned materials; performs and records inspections of incoming waste loads as required; rejects unacceptable waste materials.
  • Maintains records of incoming waste types, quantities, and sources.
  • Processes appropriate fees through cash, check, and credit card payments or initiates charges to appropriate existing customer accounts.
  • Completes necessary paperwork for all outbound shipments.
  • Responds to questions from facility users regarding acceptable and unacceptable waste, operational schedules and procedures, and other inquiries.
  • Performs related office duties including photocopying filing materials, sorting materials, preparing mailings, ordering office supplies, and cleaning activities.
  • Performs opening and closing procedures, including end-of-day reports, financial records, and daily cash drawer counts.
  • Generates reports using PC software, spreadsheets, and word processing.
  • Receipts payments made by charge accounts.
  • Assists in completing incident reports and relaying information to supervisor whenever an incident occurs.
  • Maintain inventory of all janitorial supplies.
  • Clean offices, washrooms, and corridors.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Minimum of two years of previous clerical or administrative support with customer service.
  • Any combination of education and experience which would provide the skills and abilities to fulfill the duties of the position.
