Hooper Corporation is seeking a Safety Specialist for a vital role in ensuring safety and health compliance at our construction sites, primarily located at our DeForest, WI campus. As a Safety Specialist, you will play a critical role in maintaining a safe work environment, ensuring adherence to regulations, and upholding Hooper Corporation and client safety standards. Your expertise will be essential in preserving the well-being of employees, clients, and contractors.
In this role, you will have the responsibility, authority, and knowledge necessary to create and implement site-specific Safety Plans, oversee safety compliance, and conduct safety audits at complex project sites. Experience in facility construction and capital project support, particularly in the heating and air conditioning sector, is highly beneficial.
Principal Accountabilities:
The responsibilities of the Safety Specialist in the context of Construction Safety at client job sites include, but are not limited to:
- Regularly monitor safety performance to ensure compliance with Hooper Corporation and client safety practices, regulatory requirements, and owner expectations.
- Collaborate with the construction management team to provide current safety data, incident management, metrics, and other key information for informed decision-making.
- Facilitate effective communication of safety information through safety meetings and notices on-site and with Hooper Corporate safety department.
- Conduct routine safety walks alongside the client's safety management representative.
- Participate in safety walks with the client and other contractors when appropriate.
- Immediately report non-compliance or non-conformance issues to the relevant individuals and key stakeholders.
- Attend progress and schedule meetings.
- Participate in client training as needed.
- Evaluate and audit the Site-Specific Safety Plan to ensure alignment with client and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure adherence to operational safety requirements.
- Support client initiatives as requested.
- Ensure the availability and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including maintenance and sanitation.
- Verify the presence of communication systems.
- Participate in daily safety briefings with the project field team.
- Oversee the maintenance and execution of safety equipment and decontamination procedures.
- Exercise authority to halt work in the presence of imminent safety hazards or potentially dangerous situations.
- Exercise authority to resume work following verification from the Client Safety representative.
- Conduct safety observations and audits.
- Investigate and rectify Incidents and Near Misses.
- Maintain records, including inspections, monitoring, incident and near miss investigations, etc.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Bachelor's Degree in occupational health, safety, or a related discipline preferred.
- 1 to 5 years of full-time experience in project health and safety support and leadership.
- Alternatively, 5 to 10 years of experience in construction project safety and health leadership on capital projects can be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Proficiency in OSHA requirements related to Crane, Derrick, and Hoist Safety.
- Proficiency in OSHA requirements for excavation standards at 29 CFR Part 1926, Subpart P.
- Preferred certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Certified Safety Manager Construction (CSMC), or equivalent.
- Strong commitment to safety, including the implementation of rigorous safety protocols.
- Completion of OSHA 10 and 30-hour construction training is preferred.
- Strong initiative, problem-solving, communication skills, and attention to detail.
- Valid driver's license.
