SA044Senior Linux System Administrator
The Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC, https://ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is seeking a skilled Linux System Administrator to ensure the security of our on-premise and cloud infrastructure by implementing industry best-practices.
At the CCMC, we are hosting a unique and expanding collection of space science and space weather models developed by the international research community (currently more than 80 models). We also provide custom simulation and visualization services. Access to simulation outputs is made available to the scientific community via a variety of dissemination systems. The successful candidate will be working in a hybrid environment consisting of servers located at GSFC and in the Cloud. Daily activities will include system management of LINUX servers, supporting software development and test activities, deploying and configuring applications, and assisting with system performance tuning and troubleshooting.
Responsibilities:
- Manage CCMC infrastructure, systems, and monitoring to support our growing needs. These include servers, storages, virtual machine infrastructure, web application servers, HPC clusters, basic networking, monitoring tools, and scientific software.
- Configure, monitor, maintain and troubleshoot Linux systems, in compliance with NASA security policies.
- Explore and integrate new technologies and/or processes to increase efficiency, security, and provide additional capabilities to users.
- Work to minimize manual processes by using, maintaining and expanding automation and configuration management tools.
- Configure and maintain web infrastructure on both physical and virtual servers.
- Install, configure, and maintain libraries and applications.
- Manage end user accounts, permissions, access rights, and storage allocations in accordance with best practices.
- Develop and maintain documentation about current environment setup, standard operating procedures, and best practices.
- Collaborate with the CCMC IT team to develop a plan for migrating systems and services into the AWS cloud environment.
- Develop an understanding of how on-premise High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters work.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- US citizenship is required.
- At least 5 years experience in Linux system administration.
- Self-starter and self-motivated to find issues, seek out solutions, and find opportunities for optimization.
- Willingness to learn and keep up with the constant evolution of infrastructure technology and security requirements.
- Excellent communication, problem solving, documentation and critical thinking skills.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with RHEL-derivative Linux operating systems.
- Experience using Git and configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet, Chef, etc.
- High Performance Computing experience
- Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes configuration, management, and troubleshooting
- Experience in Amazon Web Services (AWS) services configuration and administration using AWS Console and CLI scripting
- Experience in AWS cloud services including EC2, VPC, ELB, IAM, S3, and etc.
- Experience troubleshooting AWS services
- AWS certifications are a plus
- Windows operating system experience
