Job Summary:
The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position will perform on-site Roadway Worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks and are responsible for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication and various types of On-Track Safety in controlled and non-controlled track areas.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provide the required jobsite protection on each assignment, error free and consistent with the rules; including but not limited to radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits
  • Perform daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure all personnel adhere to the safety requirements of the railroad
  • Prepare and submit required electronic forms including but not limited to: a job set-up form for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other reports as required
  • Handle and place signs, derail and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, which may be necessary multiple times throughout the day
  • Actively participate in routine reoccurring safety classes and qualification training
  • Maintain a high level of communication with the RWIC supervisors and managers regarding the various assignments and schedules
  • Other duties assigned or required to meet the business needs

Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Able to complete required physical demands and/or task
  • Able to effectively warn Roadway Workers of the approach of trains
  • Understand the on-track safety training and qualification required of the Roadway Workers to be protected
  • Proficient in the radio procedure for communicating between RWIC/EIC's (Employee in Charge) and assigned work group
  • Proficient in performing a job briefing with all the Roadway Workers within their work location
  • Able to place railroad advance warning and stop signs
  • Able to install a railroad derail and apply locking device
  • Proficiency with electronic communications including e-mail and text as well as standard office applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite)

Required Education and Experience:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • A minimum of 2 years in track and/or construction experience

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • 2 - 5 years of experience in track and/or construction experience
  • Prior experience working within a railway company
  • Training in railway "Track Inspection Guidelines" or equivalent
  • Prior front line first responder experience will be considered

Additional Qualifications, Certifications, etc.:
  • CPKCS On-Track Worker and Operating Rules
