Job description

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for a Road Profile Analyst. This position serves as a Road Profile Analyst and is responsible for organizing and conducting statewide data collection and analysis projects to determine the overall quality of roadways. Extensive, overnight travel is required during the summer months. Responsibilities include operating state-of-the-art equipment and software to collect road condition data. Other duties include data quality control, research, and analysis; software and equipment maintenance, calibration, and testing; and performing a variety of continuous improvement projects as assigned. The position reports to the Pavement Management Engineer (#40080) and serves as a lead worker.

Required Education and Experience:

  • The required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to Bachelor's Degree in Construction Technology, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer/Electronic Technology, Computer Science, GIS, or a related field.
  • This position requires a minimum of 1 year of experience in computers, project management, data collection, roadway design, construction, and/or materials is required.
  • Certifications, licensure, or other credentials include: This position requires a valid Montana Driver's License, or a valid Driver's License from another state and the ability to obtain a Montana Driver's License within 30 days of hire. Maintaining a valid Montana Driver's License and insurability is a condition of employment.
  • Alternative qualifications include: Any combination of additional related work experience and education equivalent to the minimum qualifications.
  • Ability to travel 95% of the time from May to September and 5% of the time from October to April.

This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • This position requires knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering, mathematics, statistics, and the physical sciences; computer and electronics technology; technical research and analysis methods and procedures; Engineering Division objectives and Bureau goals; State, federal, AASHTO, and FHWA standards; highway construction methods and techniques; material specifications; and electronic and mechanical system diagnosis and repair.
  • This position requires skill in analyzing and interpreting technical data and maps; operating specialized equipment and GIS-based information systems; operating motor vehicles and navigation systems; drawing conclusions and making recommendations based upon technical analyses and professional judgments; and communicating technical information to varied audiences.
