POSITION SUMMARY:


This position is responsible for the delivery of patient care and education in the chemotherapy clinic setting. Educates patients and their families. Evaluates and/or assesses patient care needs and intervenes as appropriate. Collaborates with physicians and clinical staff to ensure the highest quality of patient care.

SERVING THE PATIENT:

The nurse serves an MHO patient by providing high quality and safe care. They advocate for the patient to ensure we are meeting the needs of the patient. They serve as an extension of our providers. The nurses provide both physical and emotional support.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Independently performs exam and assess the full health of the patient. Focus on physical, mental, and emotional status, as well as nutrition, pain and family involvement.
  • Assist with the administration of chemotherapy as prescribed by the physician as well as supportive care and treatment for patient symptoms. Monitor, evaluate, and record treatment results.
  • Assist the physician with a variety of patient procedures, per protocol.
  • Provides comprehensive chemotherapy education in relation to current disease process, medical treatment plan, nursing plan of care, and side effect management issues.
  • Upholds ONS standards of practice, and ASHP safe handling techniques when preparing and/or administering medications.
  • Coordinates the scheduling and administration of chemotherapy treatments. Serving as a resource for physicians, pharmacy technicians, research staff and all other disciplines involved in the plan of care.

  • Responsible for continuing oncology education and maintaining professional and technological expertise.

  • Responsible for continually updating knowledge of billing and reimbursement procedures in relation to chemotherapy administration and oncology patient care services. Aware of indigent drug programs available, making referrals for financial assistance as appropriate.
  • Assures compliance with all governing regulatory agencies, HIPAA, OSHA and internal standards and requirements.
  • Provides telephone triage assessments and intervention as appropriate, utilizing pre-approved standing orders.
  • Maintains the practices and principals set forth by MHO with a strong commitment to service, excellence, and quality.
  • Maintains professional behavior, confidentiality, and discretion at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • State of Indiana Registered Nurse License required; Chemo/ONS certification preferred.
  • Oncology experience, preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office preferred. Working knowledge/experience in electronic medical records and/ or other medical software if applicable.
  • Must possess the ability to work with patient and family members in a confident, respectful and socially professional manner.
  • Working knowledge of various office communication devices and systems.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment; prioritize tasks and workloads.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:


Clinic environment. Work requires sitting, standing, and/or walking in and around the clinic. Good manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination, along with the ability to read and comprehend written instructions. High traffic area dealing with patients, family members, other staff, and physicians. Interaction with others may be constant and interruptive. Requires working under stress. Working knowledge of computers, with the ability to type, operates a keyboard, calculate, and operate equipment common to the field. Ability and knowledge to perform professional care appropriate to a chemotherapy nurse. Knowledge of administrative policies, regulations, and procedures to administer patient care. Knowledge of medical equipment and instructions. Skill in applying and modifying the principal methods, and techniques of primary care to provide ongoing patient care. Skilled in understanding medical history, assessing, and interpreting findings, along with the knowledge of common safety hazards and emergency situations. Skill in preparing and maintaining records, reports and responding to correspondence as needed. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with physicians, patients, family members, employees, and the public. Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines. May be required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; lift and/or move patients. Frequent exposure to toxic substances, medical preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

  1. Direct Manager: Executive Director, Clinical Operations
  2. Day to Day Lead: RN Manager
  3. Strategic Coach: Executive Director, Clinical Operations

EXPECTED OUTCOMES:


  • Provides consistent education to patients/families following established protocols.
  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of and follows established safety protocols (safe handling guidelines, wearing PPE as required, QOPI standards, emergency protocols).
  • Documentation meets established standards and is complete and accurate (MAR (accurate doses), treatment assessments, injection assessments, education assessments).
  • Maintains all licensure and certification requirements (RN license, ONS chemo/immune certification, CPR).

Success for the Chemotherapy Clinic RN results in a world class patient experience, providing consistent and safe care while balancing EQ and IQ; all while maintaining strong relationships across the organization with fellow #OneMHO team members using effective communication. Also includes –
